ODiE follows Odie Harper — a homeless handyman who can fix anything except his own luck — on a single day across Austin, Texas. He's waited 294 days for a shelter bed. He has until 9pm to claim it. What happens between sunrise and curfew is funny, heartbreaking, and completely human.
The film is fully cast and begins principal photography in Austin in May 2026. Starring Dean Stanfield. Written and directed by Nick Barr. Produced by Lester Platt, SXSW mentor and veteran independent producer. Edited by Jay Trautman, whose editorial career spans the cutting rooms of Dune: Part Two, Her, and Licorice Pizza. Produced in partnership with STLL Studios, a full-service Austin production company with a national track record.
This is a $52,000 independent production. Every dollar raised goes directly to cast and crew — working at below-industry rates because they believe in the film. That includes approximately 40 unhoused individuals hired as background performers, paid for their work on screen. ODiE is not just a film about Austin's unhoused community. In a small but real way, it employs them.
Three of Austin's homeless service organizations — Trinity Center, Sunrise Navigation Center, and Charlie Center — are equity partners in the film, holding a combined 15% stake. If ODiE ever becomes profitable, those organizations benefit in perpetuity. The film will also be used as a fundraising tool directly — through community screenings where proceeds go to those centers and the people they serve. That's not a donation. It's a structure. We believe the people who inspired this story deserve a share of whatever it becomes.
A portion of all proceeds also goes directly back to Austin's unhoused community through survival packs funded by donations at the Friend of Odie level and above.
ODiE is a ground-level portrait of a city seen from the sidewalk — the Austin you don't see from the rooftop bar. Think Tangerine meets The Florida Project, shot on the real streets of a city changing faster than most of its people can keep up with.
Donations are tax-deductible through Fractured Atlas, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit.
