We started Orbiter 3 with a vision of Philadelphia as a hub for new plays.
We set out to realize that vision by 2018, with an explosion of world premieres by local writers, and a flurry of energy and activity around new playwrights.
In three years, we’ve premiered six new plays by Philadelphia writers. We’ve earned two Barrymore Awards and 10 nominations for our productions. We’ve set a new standard for hiring women and people of color in on- and off-stage roles. And since our public launch in 2014, we’ve seen the number of locally-authored plays produced in Philly more than double.
We didn’t do this alone. From the start, Orbiter 3 has been fueled by a passionate community of artists, audiences, and donors who, like us, believe that every city deserves great, local theater.
We’ve remained committed to chasing the playwrights vision in production, assuming artistic risk, and representing underserved voices and perspectives on Philadelphia stages. We’ve engaged over 90 performers, directors, designers, and technicians, 97% of whom are based here in Philadelphia. And we’ve remained dedicated to making our stages and creative teams reflect the city in which we have our roots: across our lifespan, our production teams are composed of, on average, 44% people of color and 60% women/trans/non-binary folx, consistently above the national average.
Now it’s 2018, and Orbiter 3’s mission is coming to an end. By the end of this year, we’ll transform from a producing theater into an online resource for the next generation of entrepreneurial theatermakers.
But before that happens, we’re gonna put on ONE MORE PLAY.
L Feldman’s sprawling, gorgeous A PEOPLE premieres May 16-June 3, 2018. With an ensemble of 8 actors and live musicians in the beautiful St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church--and directed by our close collaborator Rebecca Wright (I AM NOT MY MOTHERLAND, PEACEABLE KINGDOM)--A PEOPLE invites Philadelphia on a kaleidoscopic journey across Jewish diaspora.
If Orbiter 3 has meant something to you--
if you’ve come to our shows, danced at our parties, cheered on our mission to produce a new generation of writers--

Let’s finish this together!
