SYNOPSIS
Radical poet Percy Bysshe Shelley is determined to be a hero to his mannequin wife Harriet, as well as his mannequin lover Mary, until something in Mary’s effigy starts to change…
THE STORY
This story is from the perspective of the Romantic poet Percy Bysshe Shelley, who has run away with his wife Harriet, and gone to work under his idol William Godwin. It’s there he meets Mary Godwin. The story is based on historical events, but with a slight twist: Mary and Harriet are represented by mannequins.
The story is about the danger of falling in love with the idea of someone, and questions how much we should let “love” guide our actions.
Lovers of poetry, gothic suspense, and/or period dramas will find themselves right at home in the theatre!
WHY THIS STORY
Percy Shelley experimented with ideas that were both radical for the time and even today. He wrote treatises, poems and essays questioning religion, monogamy, sexual liberation, and the institution of marriage. While he might have been able to justify his ethics on paper, putting his ideas into practice in the 1800s had life and death consequences for those surrounding him.
It is our belief that someone’s reaction to Percy Shelley’s actions and ethics says something about the person they are- whether enchanted, disgusted, or everything in between. In telling this story we hope it prompts people to question where they draw their own ethical boundaries, and what values they let guide their actions.
