WHAT IS THE MOTHERHOOD READING SERIES?
During the August festival, parent artists will perform 4 staged readings written by mother playwrights and directed by mother directors!
WHY A MOTHERHOOD THEME?
Mothers are and can be both successful artists and parents. In fact, motherhood inspires creativity and mother artists offer a valuable and relatable perspective as storytellers.
“Being a parent is one of the hardest jobs for anyone and even harder for women in theatre” said Co-Founder & Artistic Director, Polly Edelstein. “By dedicating our 2018 festival to motherhood in the arts and partnering with the Parent Arts Advocacy League, PWTF hopes to not only shine a light on the amazingly talented and hardworking mother artists in our field, but to create a world where motherhood is accepted, celebrated, and supported in the arts.”
“Accessible and affordable childcare is critical,” said Co-Founder & Managing Director, Christine Petrini. “We want artists and patrons alike to enjoy the theatre while their children see a show onsite at the festival - it’s theatre for EVERYONE.” Other barriers for mothers in theatre include travel, scheduling, and wages that often neglect the need for work/life balance, as well as discrimination. To further address these topics, PWTF will host professional development including a Mothers of Color panel discussion.
HOW WE ARE ADDRESSING ISSUES/CHALLENGES FACED BY MOTHERS IN THEATRE
- Creating paid artistic opportunities for mother playwrights, directors and actors
- Offering on-site childcare by presenting a children's show to coincide with the Motherhood Reading Series
- Providing a forum for discussion and sense of community for mother artists through our Professional Development Series which includes A Mothers of Color Gathering.
- Sharing laughs and mom jokes at our MOMedy event
- Exposing theatre patrons to the community of fabulous mother artists in Philadelphia!
WHY YOUR SUPPORT MATTERS
With your help, we will be able to:
- provide artist stipends to more than 30 mother playwrights, directors and actors
- Provide subsidized on-site childcare (and a children's show!) at festival events
- Fully produce 4 staged readings (providing space, marketing, staff and ticketing) at no cost to the artists
- Allow us to showcase the talent of mother theatre makers and host a conversation about how to best serve this incredible group of artists now and in the future. After all, these theatre mamas are raising the next generation --- we owe them our support!
YOU can help us to provide opportunities for mothers in theatre with a donation. Every $5, $10 or $500 helps us towards our $2,500.00 goal.
Here's a look at where your donations go:
In addition to our general operating expenses, we need....
$4,500 to produce the Motherhood Reading Series
$3,100 to produce THE KING WHO WANTED TO CLEAN THE MOON for young audiences
Philadelphia Women’s Theatre Festival is committed to building a community that honors creating financially and artistically fulfilling opportunities for women and invites the community to bring the whole family to celebrate mother artists at the 2018 festival. Thank you for your donation!
