Play for Voices is a new podcast of international audio drama, launched in the fall of 2016 in New York City. We present new productions of contemporary and classic audio plays from around the world, exploring their aesthetic, social, and political contexts through inventive, multilingual sound design and supplemental interviews with authors, translators, and other interesting people. We produce English-language plays and plays in English translation.
Inspired by the resurgence of audio storytelling in the United States, Play for Voices aims to build an inclusive audience of listeners for international audio drama and promote dialogue among the literary, translation, theater, audio, and sound art communities. Through our podcast productions and occasional live events, we engage with wide-ranging and current concerns such as the global refugee crisis, corruption and economic stagnation in Central and Eastern Europe, government surveillance, the alienation of contemporary urban life, and the recent devastation of Iraq, to name just a few.
We'll be rounding out our first season with the release of three more productions this fall. The three featured audio plays, translated from Italian, Czech, and German, respectively, are the winners of a contest we held in partnership with the international literary journal
Words without Borders.
With your generous support, the money we raise from this campaign will help us produce our next season in 2018, which will include works from Germany, Switzerland, Spain, and Iraq.
Here are some expenses your contribution will help us cover:
$400 pays for two actors
$300 pays for six hours in the recording studio
$200 pays for rehearsal and recording supplies
$100 pays for three union actors' pension and health plan contributions
$50 pays for a year of website hosting
But any amount will earn you our undying love and gratitude!
We've been committed to paying our contributing artists from the beginning, which has meant funding the project entirely from our own pockets. In order to make Play for Voices sustainable, we're asking now for your support.
Until November 29, we're accepting donations here. From November 30 on, please use the "Donate now at Fractured Atlas!" button at playforvoices.com/support.Thank you for helping to make our second season possible.
