The Rikers Public Memory Project (RPMP) is a community-based, participatory initiative through which our collective stories about the impact of Rikers are activated to envision a more just NYC. Since launching in 2018, RPMP has collected 105 narratives from people who have experienced the devastating realities of Rikers Island.
At the start of 2020, together with Research Action Design (RAD) and Scaffold, we began a participatory design process engaging our volunteers, narrators, and community partners to create a multimedia exhibit documenting the 100-year history of Rikers and activating the stories in our archive.
This season we are raising $10,000 to preserve and make the oral history archive available to the public and begin production on the multimedia exhibit which will open in 2023.
