Land of the Sweethearts is a queer contemporary retelling of The Nutcracker to Tchaikovsky's original score, albeit with a slightly different order and some exclusions. This holiday classic is re-imagined through contemporary dance, departing from the traditional ballet to explore themes of queer rejection and acceptance, found family, and queer joy.
We've been diving into what partnering looks like when it's based on capacity and ability rather than gender. Considering what the characters look like devoid of their racial caricatures and imagining a new narrative along these lines.
Clara experiences the truth of so many LGBTIA+ individuals - when coming more into herself, she is rejected by her community and family. It often feels like you have to start from scratch when this happens - but this is NOT another tragedy. I think the LGBTIA+ community deserves happy endings, so join us on Clara's journey to acceptance, true love, and found family for a happy, wholesome love story between Clara & the Sugarplum Fairy,
