Closing out the year with Savor!

Dear Friends of Savor,

We have so many exciting things to report as we close out the year!

As we continue to work on the video portion of the project, we are delighted to share that we have an official release date! Savor music and videos will be made public starting on April 21st, 2023. Some of you have been asking about your perk fulfillments, and rest assured, we plan to send those out in February...stay tuned.

In the meantime, we have officially started programming. Please join us virtually this Sunday, Dec 11th at 4pm ET/1pm PT for a Fiesta de Hanuká in partnership with the Sephardic Brotherhood of America! Come sing Ladino Hanuka songs with Sarah and cook pumpkin bimuelos with Susan! Free registration is here: tinyurl.com/FiestadeHanuka

We’ll also be starting our in-person programming in January. If you are affiliated with a school or university, synagogue, community center or any organization that you believe would enjoy programs that dive deep into the nexus between Sephardic music, cuisine, culture and history, please be in touch!

Speaking of Savor programming, there are still a few more spots for the very special Sephardic music and food cruise we are leading from Athens to Istanbul next May (with stops in Mykonos, Rhodes, Antalya, Bodrum and Ephesus). We hope you will consider joining us for this once-in-a-lifetime experience as we sing and cook (and eat!) our way across the Aegean. Space is limited, so book soon. All the information you need is here: savorexperience.com

To end the year, we want to acknowledge and thank you for your wonderful support for the work of Savor and its chefs and musicians. We couldn’t have gotten Savor this far without you!  In our final fundraising push for this year, our goal is to raise $25,000 for video and music post-production as well as programming and educational goals for 2023. Here are three ways that everyone can help support Savor as we move forward. We would be so grateful if you would share this with your family, friends and networks! Feel free to post on social media and send to your listservs, too.

With our deep appreciation, mersi muncho!

Savor Update #2

Dear friends of Savor,

We have been keeping busy the past few months! We are happy to announce that the music portion of Savor has been recorded, and it will soon enter the final stages of mastering. A big step! Now we are deep in the throes of editing all the chef videos and preparing the recipes so that you will be able to try the dishes on your own! There are still a many moving parts, and as such, we’ve had to push out the release until after the (secular) new year. We’ll let you know the new release date soon. We continue to fundraise to help us get over the finish line to be able to get this tasty project to you as soon as we can.

Thank you again for your support this past year, and we wish you all a delicious year ahead. In that spirit, here’s a little taste of something to look forward to next year – a Savor -themed cruise with us! The official registration will be open at the end of the month, so stay tuned for that announcement soon! Feel free to mark your calendars in the meantime.

Save-the-dates!

Anyada buena i dulse...a good and sweet new year,
Sarah Aroeste & Susan Barocas

SaVOR Update #1

Dear Friends of Savor,

We want to thank you again for your support of Savor: A Sephardic Music & Food Experience! Because of your contributions, we are half way to our fundraising goal needed to make this project happen. The chefs are already busy filming their cooking videos using recipes inspired by the songs featured on the Savor music album, and that music is in pre-production now. Things are moving forward toward our November 11 release date. But we still need to raise the remaining half of our budget.

Getting the buzz out has been a tremendous help already, and we hope we can count on you to continue to help us spread the word about this unique project! Please share Savor -- https://saraharoeste.com/savor -- with your circles of friends and networks including other music and food enthusiasts and people interested in enjoying and preserving Sephardic culture. Additionally, does your workplace match donations? Are you connected to any foundations or grant making organizations? If so, please do let us know.

The next few months will be busy as Savor continues to take shape, and we can’t wait to offer you some tastes along the way! Stay tuned for more soon.

With appreciation,
Sarah Aroeste & Susan Barocas

Bienvinido. Welcome to Savor!

The connection between music and food is at the heart of Sephardic culture and tradition. The two sensory experiences have survived in their unique forms, despite the Spanish Inquisition, Balkan Wars, the Holocaust and more. Song and food have united Sephardic Jews in their diaspora and have connected them through shifting centuries and borders.

With this in mind, we are excited to introduce to you Savor (pronounced sa-VOR and meaning “taste” or “flavor”), a new, unique project that brings together these cultural touchstones in a fresh and meaningful way. Conceived by award-winning Ladino singer Sarah Aroeste, Savor is the result of diligent research and curation that led to the selection of ten songs in the Ladino language that focus on food. Rather than being about food in general, these songs are singular in that each one revolves around a very specific food beloved among Sephardim. For example, one song is solely about stuffed grape leaves (Una muchacha en Selanika), while another adoringly lays out seven delicious ways to prepare an eggplant (Siete modos de guisados se guisa la berenjena). Songs such as these have never been compiled in one collection. Our aim is to do just that, but to take it one step further…

We, Aroeste along with renowned Sephardic chef and food writer Susan Barocas, are presenting a multi-sensory experience by matching each song with a recipe created by a celebrated female chef helps to preserve and promote Sephardic food through her work. The recipes will be demonstrated in ten special videos showing each chef preparing the dish based on the song and discussing the ingredients, flavors, connections to Sephardic cuisine and history as well as personal connections to the food.

The ten Savor music tracks will be recorded and produced alongside the ten chefs’ matching videos. The result will be a conversation between music and food embodied in a beautifully designed CD and booklet (with song translations, recipes, and QR codes to the videos), as well as a full digital download of an all-inclusive Savor package.

By uniting the music with recipes and making them available across various platforms, audiences will experience Sephardic culture in an exciting, innovative way. Savor is an expansive project that will include food and music seminars, educational materials and an expanded book that dives deeper into the connections between Sephardic history, music and cuisine.

In order to complete production of the Savor music album and chef videos, we need your help! Our goal is to raise $48,000 by June 15th to finance the remainder of Savor, including final music and video production, film editing, art design, manufacturing and more). Please consider being a part of this unique project and make a tax-deductible donation today. You can also enjoy some delicious perks as our thanks for your contributions!

With your support, Savor will help foster community and connection through music and food and bring many people together to create an accessible, inclusive, enduring way to share our beautiful Sephardic culture and history with larger communities of all ages and backgrounds.

We thank you in advance for your recognition of this vital work to keep Sephardic culture alive in dynamic new ways.

Kome i sinti kon gana - eat and listen in good health!
