ABOUT:
This production is female written, directed, produced and designed. We are on a mission to create positive, empowering content with many strong roles for women as well as to tell our own stories.
"If We Really Were Witches" is a comedy about the witch hunts-- "The Crucible-meets-Monty-Python." Mildred, Agnes and Suds are real witches who travel through time and space to show injustice a thing or two. They are summoned to Newtown to rescue Obediently Snead from being executed for witchcraft. They come up against the Pricks of Puritanical Piety Guild and Social Club— a rabid group of witch hunters who use witch prickers (and other "modern science”) to test their victims. This comedy is performed by four actors playing various roles.
ARTISTIC:
"Witches" is directed and produced by Alexandra Scordato of Forgotten Ones Productions out of New York City.
It is written by award-winning playwright, Kelly F. Burr. (KellyFBurr.com.) Her plays have been produced professionally around the New York City area and Off-Broadway, and she was awarded the 2022 Vermont Playwrights Award.
HISTORY:
"Witches" was first conceptualized when Kelly was in graduate school doing a paper on Macbeth. She found herself laughing at the real, legal charges that condemned women to death. Shortly after, she discovered one of her ancestors was burned at the stake in Scotland, which inspired one of the main characters in "Witches," Ghost Janet. She wanted to give the victims a better ending; a way to be remembered. Too many people died alone and in shame and misery.
