Since it’s inception, Selah Theatre Project has endeavored to create experiences where theatre serves as language for building community, exploring difficult topics, or simply discovering shared human experiences that transcend race, religion, nationality, and all of the categorizations used to divide us. The project’s programming has impacted hundreds of area youth and adults—including participants in numerous after-school programs, parks and recreation activities, short-term drama camps, and academy-style theatre classes.
We’ve always dreamed of building dedicated theatre spaces in each of the counties we serve, and that dream is within reach today. Selah Theatre Project has been offered an opportunity to establish a new theatre space in downtown Winchester. The Hideaway Café, recently named best locally owned coffee house in the 2017 Virginia Living Magazine reader’s survey, has offered Selah Theatre Project a chance to bring it’s exceptional programing to downtown Winchester as the resident theatre in a space called The Boiler Room (named in honor of the location’s original purpose within the building it occupies). Through this unique partnership, we will be able to establish custom-built space within one of the most recognizable buildings in the city—the historic Old Post Office across from Handley Library at the corner of Piccadilly and Braddock streets.
The space set aside for us is perfect. It’s roomy, yet intimate, and it affords everything we need to bring our special kind of programming to Winchester and Frederick County. While its structure is perfect, its previous residents prior to Hideaway Café were unkind to its turn-of-the-century brickwork and unique architectural features. We’ve got some work to do in order to make this dream a reality, and we need your help to capitalize on this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.
We need renovation champions to help us fund the work that must be done. While we are committed to maintaining the integrity of the building’s historic features, there are several things we will need to do in order to make the space ready for our first show. From drywall and electric to handicap accessibility and stage lighting, Selah Theatre Project will be working to make the space a source of pride for this community.
In an effort to secure the support needed, we have setup this appeal affording several thank you rewards with limited availability. Please consider helping in any way you can. We are also seeking corporate partners and private individuals to serve as season sponsors or to support the project on a larger scale. If you are interested in supporting this project at all of the following levels, please visit the line to our online fundraising platform or call 540-686-5185.
Thank you for supporting Selah Theatre Program and all of the actors and theatre enthusiasts your backing allows us to serve.
Dramatically Yours,
LaTasha Do'zia-Earley
