A transnational literary organization based in New York City, Singapore Unbound envisions and works for a creative and fulfilling life for everyone through the arts and activism.
All our activities are guided by our Five-Point Compass:
(1) Everyone should have the means and opportunities to live a creative and fulfilling life.
(2) With careful stewardship, Earth provides the means for everyone to live such a life.
(3) Where existing social, economic, and political arrangements prevent anyone from leading such a life, we work to highlight and change them.
(4) We do so through the subversive, innovative, and empathetic powers of the arts, especially by amplifying underrepresented voices.
(5) Working from the existing framework of nation-states, we cultivate a strong and genuine solidarity around the actualization of the common good beyond borders.
This year
Singapore Unbound celebrates the 10th anniversary of our Second Saturdays Reading Series! We are raising funds to sustain this beautiful reading series and SUSPECT, our two-year-old journal of Asian writing and art. Help us pay authors and artists, and keep our events and journal free!
Held in private homes and indie venues around NYC, the
Second Saturdays Reading Series has featured award-winning authors, such as Vijay Seshadri, Monique Truong, Susan Choi, Gina Apostol, Madeleine Thien, Jericho Brown, and Jeremy Tiang, together with up-and-coming authors from Asia and America. In the last year, James Hannaham, Irina Mashinski, Arundhathi Subramaniam, and Yu-Mei Balasingamchow, among others, read for the series. The series also featured artists from other disciplines, such as the Radical Evolution Theater Collective, the singer Phillip Cheah, and the musician AËLÍN. We have collaborated with the New York Public Library, the Asian American Arts Alliance, the Asian American Writers' Workshop, the New York Immigration Coalition, and Singapore's Migrant Death Map to mount imaginative and thought-provoking events.
SUSPECT, our journal of Asian writing and art, publishes a new article on its website every Friday. Since our start on February 22, 2022, we've published poetry, fiction, essays, book reviews, and artworks from Australia, Bangladesh, China, Kazakhstan, India, Indonesia, Japan, Malaysia, Palestine, the Philippines, Singapore, the UK, and the US. Our last poetry contest saw 600 entries from over 40 countries. Guided by an experienced editor and award-winning writer, our team of young but discerning editors is dedicated to bring you the most vital creative works. Read the journal to find out how good it is!
Make a generous donation so that we can pay our authors and editors. We strongly believe that, like any other workers, authors and artists should be paid for their creative work. All our editors are volunteers who contribute their talent and time because they believe in the power of the arts. We hope that you share our belief and donate generously to Singapore Unbound.
We are aiming to raise
USD15,000 for next year. Here's the breakdown:
Second Saturdays speakers (36 x $100) = $3,600
SUSPECT articles (64 x $100) = $6,400
SUSPECT art (52 x $50) = $2,600
Editors' volunteer stipends = $2,400
