About

Phantom Key is a new arts and education nonprofit that focuses on providing safe, consistent, and affordable space and programming for young and developing artists, with a focus on opportunity for youth and those who otherwise may not have access to these spaces. At Phantom Key, artists can rehearse, create, and use professional recording services and practice spaces alongside other artists of all genres and ages. This unique cross-generational and cross-genre environment will help build an inclusive community and safe space for a diverse group of Colorado artists.

But really, what is Phantom Key?

Arts spaces and artists in Denver are being displaced by new development and rising costs in Denver. In the past 5 years, over 20 independent performance venues and spaces were permanently closed or repurposed. Many of these venues hosted affordable practice spaces, and even residencies, for people who were then left without a safe place to create, work and learn. Phantom Key’s founders include youth, local musicians and artists, nonprofit workers, and community-driven funders who aim to create a vibrant and affordable space for artists in Denver.

Phantom Key's founders identified this need for stable spaces where people can create art and work towards their professional and community goals and founded the Black in Bluhm Project in 2018.  These services were free and/or cheap, and the musicians who qualify for it through a merit-based system of artistry, hard-work and accountability will have stable, affordable creative spaces to establish ownership over for extended periods. Black in Bluhm Project became Phantom Key in 2022, after 3 years of piloting its programming, and continues to operate on East Colfax.  Phantom Keys doors remain open to all in its safe, sound treated, professionally backlined and accessible programming, namely, usage of a subsidized rehearsal space that has been funded through the work of Denver artists and area grants and populated with their own gear, ran through their mentorship, and guided by their experience.  The studio space features:

  • Subsidized/no cost rental rates
  • 24/7 access
  • Climate-controlled.
  • ADA accessible
  • Sound treated
  • Easy load in
  • Professional Backline provided (drums, bass, amps, cables, PA, guitars).
