The BOXIE Studio is a multi-set, mix-and-match venue to fit all types of events and productions– a queer and PoC owned space accessible for all kinds of creators and creatives. Located in Downtown Los Angeles, BOXIE features a life sized Doll House, ball pit, tons of lighting and projector options, a new stage manager booth (we just finished construction!), and an abundance of props to use in a variety of live events, filming, and community celebrations.
We want a space that not only fits a wide variety of needs, but also that serves and is accessible to a larger population, especially DTLA and South Central locals. To do this, we’ve made lighting equipment, video monitors, and much more available in the space to meet smaller productions and aspiring artists’ needs. Our dream is that everyone who comes to BOXIE with a project in mind can adjust the space to suit their needs. We’re a modular, unique, venue that transforms from daytime shoots to nighttime shows.
We’ve got some big plans for the new year, including:
- 3 separate opportunities for artists to apply and put up an experimental show at Boxie, with our space, tech, and our team’s venue management services provided completely free of charge.
- A new partnership with FieldNotesCompany to put on a unique variety show/comedy night every month.
- Special day-long photography experiences curated by POC, women, or queer guest photographers, so that members of their communities can show off for the cameras in a safe, welcoming space.
- Hosting Boxie + Pepper Moon events to help fundraise for this new indie book store!
- Artists Connect - a networking project where artists of various mediums can seek out other collaborators within the BOXIE community, in order to build their team for future projects.
We feel strongly about connecting fellow creatives with our network of artists — photographers, theatre makers, DJ’s, visual artists, live musicians, clothing designers — and it’s time for us to take the next step towards building that.
What we’re gonna do with the money:
- $3,200 - Theatre curtains. This is a huge and expensive undertaking, but would open up so many doors for young designers and performers in need of an affordable black-box theatre space.
- $480 - Installing new stage lights, and replacing our current house lights with adjustable warm/cool bulbs. This’ll give our collaborators a new level of control over audience experience.
- $350 - Getting a PA system and better speakers for projects with live music.
- $780 - Storage services for our new tech!!
- $600 - Covering our overhead costs while we’re closed for renovations (more time for creative remodeling would be great, but this is the minimum amount we’d need to be able to close our doors).
If you have a specific project that you want your money to pay for, let us know and we’ll dedicate your donation to it! Anything we’re able to raise beyond our goal will go directly towards subsidizing costs for artists who can’t afford traditional venues/rehearsal spaces, and covering overhead costs while they’re working at BOXIE.
Join us on this journey, share our campaign, and donate to become a part of BOXIE history!
