WHO WE ARE

The Exponential Festival is an annual, month-long experimental performance festival occurring every January in Brooklyn. Every year, we bring diverse, risky, and rigorous local performance work to new audiences and support New York City-based artists by providing mentorship opportunities and production resources. Founded in 2016 to remove the barriers to entry for early-career artists, Exponential is now considered one of NYC's “beacons of experimental work” (The New York Times).

ARTIST FEES

Your support will allow us to increase artist stipends to our highest historical rate of $500 plus $150 per week in residency, supporting 18 productions in 6 Brooklyn venues and 2 world-premieres on our YouTube channel. By expanding compensation and resources each year, we are equipping early-career artists to self-determine how to allocate funds. The free resources we provide (like photography, videography, press representation, and more) help artists build upon and contextualize their work to future presenters, funders, and audience members.

“Every year gets better at the fringe-forward Exponential Festival.” (Helen Shaw)

In ‘24 we presented 16 productions at 8 venues over 31 days. Our shows were made by over 120 artists and were attended by over 4,300 people in theaters and online. Our collective work received extensive press coverage from outlets such as The New York Times, American Theatre Magazine, Vulture, and The New Yorker, which called our ’24 programming “the rawest and most adventurous of the [NYC January festivals.]”

IMPACT

We believe that a radical intervention is needed in the way new performance work gets made. One that lends itself to more collective empowerment in our artist communities and elevates experimentation in the face of commercialism. These are the ideals we believe are key to artistic innovation and thriving arts communities. Your support will aid us in re-centering our theatrical ecosystem on local artists.
