Amanda Borden, Amy Chow, Dominique Dawes, Shannon Miller, Dominique Moceanu, Jaycie Phelps, and Kerri Strug made up the first U.S. women’s gymnastics team to win Olympic team gold at the 1996 Atlanta games.
The Magnificent Seven is a musical that imagines their inner lives on the two days of team competition, as they reach for their dreams and their faces on the Wheaties box, all leading up to a star-making vault heard ’round the world.
We're raising funds to put on the first NYC production of
The Magnificent Seven, a show we've been writing since 2016, but dreaming of writing, in some sense or another, since we watched the 1996 Olympics as young teens. Show-writers Gordon Leary (book and lyrics) and Julia Meinwald (music), have been writing together for over ten years (we're celebrating our 14th collabo-versary this year!) On this show we're joining forces with director Nikki DiLoreto and music director Alex Ratner, both of whom have been with the project since its infancy. The cast is made up of both artists we've been creating work for throughout our careers, and a few new recruits we're eager to welcome into our artistic family. Aaron Rossini is on board as our general manager, bringing with him the artistic and production expertise he gets as artistic director of Fault Line Theatre. You can read more about the creative team at our show website:
https://www.magnificentsevenmusical.com/ The show will run for 12 performances at Theatre Row in midtown Manhattan. Rehearsals begin in June, with performances starting in July.
Funds contributed to this project will support fair compensation for the actors, designers, musicians, and all the other talented humans who will work to bring our production to life. This money will create our set, costumes (gotta have those red, white, and blue scrunchies) and props. It will also cover the less exciting (but no less necessary) particulars like rehearsal space, insurance, and wardrobe maintenance. We're trying to mount the show as economically as possible, while still getting to fully explore artistically.
We deeply appreciate your support to help us make this musical happen. Thanks in advance for helping us stick the landing!
