The Neighbors was founded in Chicago in February 2020 by four friends who started out as neighbors. Throughout this journey, we have remained dedicated to building a platform for artists around the world to get to know each other. Our goal, as The Neighbors, is to break down the myth that the art world is a cold place. We aim to unveil goodness going on in our cities in the arts and social justice scenes. We believe in honoring the individual in order to empower the collective.
That’s where our journalism and newsletters come in. Each month we release news from our communities. This usually takes the form of interviews conducted by Sophia Stopper and Danielle Mann with people we’ve invited or those who have reached out to us about having a conversation. These interviews spotlight artists and social justice practitioners in their careers and homes. We ask big questions and whisper sweet nothings. Sometimes it’s “what should we be paying attention to in the media right now” and sometimes it's “what’s your final thought before you fall asleep”. The Neighbors News aims to publish meaningful storytelling.
The Neighbors is an Arts Organization built on mutual support. It has served over 100 artists from over 35 cities across the globe with our virtual and in person programming. In January 2024 we obtained Fiscal Sponsorship from Fractured Atlas and began fundraising. We aim to publish The Neighbors News which will be a magazine whose issues each spotlight up-and-coming artists and social justice practitioners in each city for each issue. We will distribute the printed magazine to our global audience, raising awareness both locally and globally.
Our mission is to put a microphone to stories that have been historically unheard. Tales that have yet to be told. Encouraging these music notes to form in unison catalyzing a cacophonous symphony.
We aim to publish 50 copies of 8.5” x 11” folded 32 page magazines at Fireball Printing in Philadelphia about the arts and social justice scenes in Chicago entitled The Neighbors News: Chicago. We need your help to make this possible! Danielle Mann, accomplished Illustrator and Designer as well as Co-Director of The Neighbors will design this magazine from scratch. Sophia Stopper, prolific poet and writer and Co-Director of The Neighbors, will conduct interviews and devise articles that will be included in the magazine. We hope to bring to light a diverse community of makers and shakers and show what is happening undercover in Chicago right now. We will distribute the magazine to our worldly community, having a local mindset in a global environment.
After we publish The Neighbors News: Chicago, we plan to move on to New York, Mexico City, London, Lahore, and the list goes on! These publications will be made available in print and on our website, with an e-blast going out each month to highlight certain content to our audience. We hope to share this material far and wide with our organization expanding as time goes on.
