THE POLYPHONISTS are overjoyed to be collaborating  with composer JONATHAN WOODY on a new commission, which will be the centerpiece of our 2022–23 season. Jonathan’s piece will be the nucleus of our new concert program, which explores diverse perspectives on the love song. The premiere performance will take place in Oklahoma City on Friday, January 27th, 2023. We hope you, our cherished friends and audience, will consider donating to this fundraiser to help us achieve our goals for the season!

Jonathan, who is a long-time friend and colleague of all four Polyphonists, has chosen to set the poem "Evening Music" by May Sarton (1912–1995). Sarton's poetic voice has been celebrated for its unique and daring approach to themes of women's love and sexuality. "Evening Music," Jonathan says, "is about love and music and how the interplay of music and the interplay of love are similar… I couldn’t think of a better text to [set] for friends who are two married couples who I love — all four of them — so much." (You can read more about Jonathan, who is also a world-class bass-baritone, in his biography below.)

The program will also feature a cappella works by beloved 20th-century composers, including Francis Poulenc, Samuel Barber, Benjamin Britten; as well as other living composers, including Jennifer Higdon and Dominick DiOrio.

Your donation will go directly toward our expenses for this ambitious project, namely:
— Jonathan's commission fee
— Recording costs for producing new, high-quality videos of Jonathan's piece and other works on the program
— Travel, venue, and publicity costs for live concerts in cities around the country, including Santa Fe, Oklahoma City, and Washington, D.C.

As a token of our gratitude, we are excited to offer an exclusive, live-streamed concert on December 30th for supporters who donate $37.50 or more. That concert will be available to stream on-demand through March 1st, 2023. And there are additional rewards for donors of all levels, including signed programs, preferred seating at live concerts, and an exclusive Q&A with the artists!

Lastly, we are honored to be the recipients of a matching grant for this project: the Hegardt Foundation will match the first $5,000 raised. Donate today, and your gift will go twice as far!

We hope you will join us for our performances, and consider pitching in to help us reach our fundraising goal to finance the commission, performance, and recording of this new work! Even if you are not able to donate, we hope you'll share this fundraiser with your friends on social media and encourage them to check and support out the Polyphonists. From the bottom of our hearts, thank you for all your support and generosity!

JONATHAN WOODY
is a versatile and dynamic musician who maintains an active schedule as a performer and composer in New York and across North America. In demand as a bass-baritone soloist, Jonathan makes regular appearances with leading historically-informed orchestras and collaborates with vocal and chamber ensembles working at the highest level. Immersed in the world of new music as a performer and composer, Jonathan has participated in several premiere performances of leading composers' works, including Ted Hearne's The Source (2014), Ellen Reid's p r i s m (2019 Pulitzer-Prize winner), Missy Mazzoli's Breaking the Waves (NYC premiere, 2018), and Du Yun's Angel's Bone (2017 Pulitzer-Prize winner). His own compositional voice blends 17th- and 18th-century inspiration with the minimalism and socially-conscious subject matter of today's music. Since 2020, he has received commissions from Apollo’s Fire, the Choir of Trinity Wall Street, Chanticleer, the Handel and Haydn Society, and the Cathedral Choral Society of Washington DC, among others. A 2021 commission for Skylark Ensemble was included on their GRAMMY®-nominated recording, it’s a long way. Other recording credits include the Choir of Trinity Wall Street’s Israel in Egypt (Musica Omnia), ACRONYM’s Cantica Obsoleta, Boston Early Music Festival’s St. Matthew Passion of J. Sebastiani (RadioBremen), New York Polyphony’s Roma Æterna (BIS Records), and the Choir of Trinity Wall Street’s Missa Gentis Humanae (Musica Omnia).
