The Walk Home is a love letter to cities, where a million moments are happening at the same time. The film explores moments when seemingly nothing and everything happens simultaneously. What happens when our most private moments are exposed in a collective shared space? What happens when we allow a stranger to see us at our most vulnerable? Sometimes a city opens up and holds us when we need it most. Sometimes all we’re looking for is someone to bear witness to our truth.
I began writing The Walk Home during the pandemic. New York City was a ghost town. I needed a way to keep my heart from breaking so that I could focus on something other than how much we had lost. I longed for connection; one of those random human, in-person exchanges that happened all the time before we had to isolate and distance ourselves. I decided to adapt a short story I had written into a film. I shared the script with a few people, and we exchanged ideas. Each person who read it seemed to relate and resonate with it, but at that time, we were still in lock-down. So, I decided to submit it to some film festivals that accepted short film scripts and to my surprise and delight, my little script won 4 awards.
Random Acts, written and performed by Renata Hinrichs, is an autobiographical play that follows the journey of a woman as she looks back at what she experienced in her childhood. What happens when the past comes hurling into the present? How can a random act of brutality be transformed by a seemingly random act of courage and grace? How can witnessing the aftermath of Martin Luther King Jr.’s death, dancing with Julie Andrews and an unexpected message from the past shape her soul? What can she learn by looking back? Sometimes an act of kindness goes farther than we could ever imagine. Kindness in Chaos; How far does the ripple go?
