Under Review: Katahdin, the second film in the Under Review series, takes place in the Katahdin Woods and Waters National Monument outside of Penobscot, Maine.
By drawing attention to the National Parks and Monuments that are threatened to be opened for industrial development, the series aims to increase public awareness of our public lands and promote protection of our nation’s disappearing wilderness. On December 4, 2017, the President drastically reduced the size of two national monuments in Utah to allow for oil and gas development: Bears Ears and Grand Staircase-Escalante. This reduction puts 25 other national monuments and 40 national parks at risk for oil and gas extraction, mining, logging and commercial development, destroying the already limited untouched wildlife and nature in this country and further contributing to climate change.

My most potent source of inspiration is nature. As a lifelong outdoor enthusiast, a world traveler, and an artist with supporting degrees in Biology and Environmental Science, I’ve always looked towards the natural world for motivation. This film is inspired by Shel Silverstein's “The Giving Tree”. We will be using this source material and emotional story telling through dance and film to highlight the modern day relationships of humans and trees. I am displaying how we use trees as a day-to-day resource, creating a large industry spanning from the initiation of logging all the way through final production and processing. The Katahdin community is divided on their support for the protected status of the monument: with half the community fighting to continue the timber industry through logging to support their families, and the other half fighting to protect the natural and wild habitats within the monument.

Conservation of these public lands are directly correlated to combating climate change. These lands provide a home for wildlife, store fossil fuels, and bring people into a mindful relationship with nature. I have been fortunate to travel to these beautiful monuments but know not everyone has that opportunity, which is why I'm using film as a way to bring Katahdin Woods and Waters National Monument directly to the public. By highlighting the sweeping landscapes and exquisite nature in tandem with the story, the film will instill hope and provide solutions for conservation of our National Parks and Monuments.
