It's been incredible!

Hello wonderful donors!

Our performances and workshops have come to a close and hopefully, our smiles in this picture express the gratitude and joy in our hearts that is difficult to say in words.

This has been an unparalleled experience.

Both of our performances were a great success. Our opening night had a few minor shaky moments, which is to be expected on our first night performing together after 3 years, but as one of our Egyptian friends said, "If you're looking for perfection, the first night was 90%..."  That same friend was moved to tears, which he said was not usual for him. Many others came up to us after the show to share how moved they were. We were invited to meet with a few leaders of other festivals in Egypt, Jordan, and Tunisia after the show and they gave us beautiful feedback about the strength and "effort" they witnessed between us, which we learned is uncommon in performances here, especially with an all-female cast.

On the second night, we NAILED IT! We left the stage feeling so proud. Again, audience members shared how moved they were by the piece. Some even said it was "perfection."

Our workshops were a delight. The people who attended were talented actors, dancers, directors, choreographers, and performers from Egypt, Syria, and more. They brought courage, trust, and open minds, which allowed us to go very deep in a short period of time. By the end, many said it was as if they'd known each other their whole lives. We can attest that they created and moved with each other as if that were true!

We received a wealth of support from the CIFET festival and our friends here in Egypt, which allowed us to do what we do best - from providing transportation each day, to making sure we were well-fed, to translating during our workshops, and even coming with us to the store to help us buy our SIM cards!

We had coffee with a US ambassador last week, and together, we brainstormed a bunch of exciting possible ways for us to come back and reach a wider span of communities here in Egypt, such as groups of women in smaller towns. We hope to return in the not-so-far-off future with their support.

So far, we've been able to see other performances in the festival from Italy, Morocco, Tunisia, Iraq, and Mexico, and we plan to see more before we leave. We've also been able to connect with many of the other performers and share our perspectives on theatre and touring internationally. This kind of international experience is something we've been dreaming of for a long time. We want to thank you again for your support in helping us to live the dream. We are so grateful for all of you.

Love,
Juliana, Hannah, and Nicholette

We did it!

Well amazing donors, WE DID IT! Not only did we meet our fundraiser goal, WE EXCEEDED IT!

We cannot even begin to express our gratitude for the wealth of love and support you've given us. We feel you holding us up from afar and as we step onto the stage on opening night tonight, we'll bring you along with us in our hearts. Thank you so much again!

Love,
Hannah, Juliana, and Nicholette

We're in Cairo!

Hello amazing donors!

We're here in Cairo! We all made it in one piece, including our beloved table. We hit the ground running when we got here, rehearsing and acquiring all of the additional materials we'd need. We teach our first workshop tomorrow at NAHDA Arts School (the location shown in the picture below) and we have our first performance on Friday, September 2nd!

Our fundraiser ends in only a few days and we are at 85% of our goal. WE ARE SO CLOSE! If you are able, we would very much appreciate it if you would please share the fundraiser link with anyone who you think may also be interested in supporting us. Your generous donations helped to cover all of our expenses, so any funds raised from here forward will go straight to us as professional artists to fund our hard work on the show.

Thank you so much again for your support!
Hannah, Juliana, and Nicholette

Back in the Room Together!

Hello amazing donors!

We wanted to give you a special sneak peek into this exciting moment in our journey: Yesterday, for the first first time in 3 years, we got back in the room together! It was exhilarating, and a little scary at times, but we left feeling encouraged and confident about performing in Egypt next week.

We're sharing a link to a clip of our rehearsal at Sports Basement in Berkeley, CA. You'll see us expressing fear and vulnerability as we attempt one of our most challenging acrobatic movement sequences in the piece for the first time.

When we're on stage, it's easy to take moments like this for granted, but we wanted to share it with you, since you are here with us, supporting us, so you can celebrate this achievement alongside us!

We also wanted to celebrate with you that we've reached 80% OF OUR FUNDRAISER GOAL, and we still have over a week left of our campaign to go all the way! You have been incredible and we are so grateful.

Thank you all so much again for your incredible support!

Hannah, Juliana, and Nicholette

We're Over Halfway There!

Incredible donors! We have reached the halfway point of our campaign and we're thrilled to report that thanks to your generous support, we are over halfway to our goal!! Thank you so very much. We truly couldn't do this without you.

Our Mission

As an ensemble of theatre-makers, we reveal the underbelly of the human experience through the intimacy of live performance. We employ heightened forms of physical expression such as acrobatics and dance to create stories that are visceral and universal. Our wholehearted engagement on stage forges meaningful connections which are a rare but vital resource in our current world.

CIFET Festival

Founded in 1988, Cairo International Festival for Experimental Theater is an international festival organized by the Egyptian Ministry of Culture. CIFET aims to introduce the latest developments in the international theatre scene to Egyptian and Arab audiences, while also serving as a platform for local and regional theatre productions for the benefit of specialists and interested festivals all over the world.

The festival recently invited UpLift Physical Theatre to perform for two nights and teach two 4-hour workshops at the festival. Aware of only having a few months to prepare, the ensemble of Through the Waves took a leap of faith and seized the opportunity. The festival will generously provide accommodations, meals, and internal travel for the company.

In addition, UpLift will offer two days of 3-hour workshops each for NAHDA Arts School for Social and Physical Theatre and Cairo Contemporary Dance Center.

Through the Waves

Through the Waves is a Theatre Bay Area (TBA) Award-recommended show. Weaving a poetic vocabulary of acrobatic movement and storytelling, this intimate play tells the tale of one woman, lost between the uncharted waters of her grief and the mountaintops of her joyful memories following the disappearance of her soul-mate. Created, directed, and performed by four women in residence at the San Francisco Circus Center in 2016, this production has toured to the San Diego Fringe Festival (2018) and to the Bing Crosby Theater in Spokane, Washington as a keynote performer in the Kennedy Center American College Theatre Festival (2018).
