Villain: DeBlanks - Edinburgh Fringe 2018

Villain: DeBlanks does Edinburgh Fringe 2018

After more than 3 years of benefit shows in NYC, LA & London, we are bringing our (ADJECTIVE)_____ shenanigans to the young audiences of the Fringe and beyond!

     Edinburgh, Scotland, United Kingdom
    This is a Fiscally-Sponsored Project

“MADCAP HILARITY! What happens when you mix equal parts Murder, She Wrote with Mad Libs? You get Billy Mitchell’s rib-tickling theatrical confection.” –BroadwayWorld.com

    What is Villain: DeBlanks?

A Time Out New York Critic's Pick, written by Billy Mitchell, Villain: DeBlanks is the fill-in-the-blanks whodunit that guarantees you'll laugh your (BODY PART)_____ off!

While originally written to ignite kids' excitement for vocabulary, DeBlanks has been presented for more than three years as late night comedy benefits for excellent charities such as St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, ASPCA, Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS, ACLU, Big Brothers Big Sisters, The Make A Difference Trust, and many more. Our all-star casts have featured such notable performers as Kathleen Turner, Bebe Neuwirth, Bruce Vilanch, Brenda Braxton, Glynis Barber, Tracy Thoms, Justin Guarini, Maulik Pancholy, a list of Tony, Olivier & Emmy winners, and some of the funniest people in show business. You can find all the names at villaindeblanks.com.

For the Edinburgh Festival Fringe, though, we are bringing it back to our original audience: kids! We can't wait to see what the wee folk of Scotland -- and their mums and dads -- think of our shenanigans, so we've booked 5 performances during the final week of August to let a few hundred kids show us how it's done. And, honestly, we need your tax-deductible help to get there.

“UNAPOLOGETICALLY, HILARIOUSLY, FUN! The largest and most public game of vaudevillian Mad Libs I have ever seen.”Applause! Applause!

What is the Edinburgh Festival Fringe?

The Edinburgh Festival Fringe is the single biggest celebration of arts and culture on the planet. Every August for three weeks the city of Edinburgh, Scotland’s capital, welcomes an explosion of creative energy from around the globe.

With 53,232 performances of 3,398 shows in 300 venues in 2017, there are literally thousands of performers on hundreds of stages all over Edinburgh presenting shows for every taste. From big names in the world of entertainment to unknown artists looking to build their careers, the festival caters to everyone and includes theatre, comedy, dance, physical theatre, circus, cabaret, children's shows, musicals, opera, music, spoken word, exhibitions and events. Learn more about the Fringe here.

What happens with your tax-deductible donation?

We spend it! But we spend it wisely, appropriately, and (ADJECTIVE)_____-ly, because we've been approved for financial sponsorship by Fractured Atlas, and we will be held accountable for every dollar donated to our cause. As our fiscal sponsor, Fractured Atlas provides oversight to ensure that donated funds are used for appropriate expenses, and their fiscal sponsorship enables us to solicit fully tax-deductible donations (unless explicitly noted at your particular giving level).

And remember, it's not just our performances you're supporting, but also the hundreds of kids who will get to show off their language skills, learn to listen for clues, learn the value of their vote, and laugh along with their parents the whole time!

The Fringe presents opportunities for recognition, rewards, and future productions, but it is not free. Your donation will help us tackle round-trip travel to Scotland, cost-efficient lodging in Edinburgh, the venue's rental fee (which includes support with lighting & sound, audience management, box office & ticketing, and marketing), a very modest stipend for local performers, and show-specific expenses, most importantly printing programs & scripts.

Note: In the event we raise more money than we need for the Fringe, we hope to produce a weekly run of Villain: DeBlanks for the kids in NY, NY or Asbury Park, NJ.

"1000% PURE FUN and LAUGHTER!" -CallMeAdam.com

    Who's going to the Festival?

Villain: DeBlanks has always had a seat-of-the-pants atmosphere, and we are keeping that feeling alive by bringing the show to the festival without casting. "Wait, what? But..." That's right. Our financial goal is so reasonable because the show will be entirely represented by creator/director Billy Mitchell, and performer/one-man support staff Eddie Capuano.

Once we get to Edinburgh, we will poach the funniest performers we can find, and then bribe them with coffee and scones to get up and (VERB)_____ our show at 10am every morning. Being a hybrid of Mad Libs & murder mystery, and essentially a very uninhibited reading, the less preparation the cast has, the funnier everything gets. It's not quite as commando as it sounds, though, because we have a network of more than 130 professional actors to refer us to friends performing in other Festival shows, and possibly by being there themselves. It will be first-rate talent and high-stakes hilarity.

Billy Mitchell (creator/director) is an award-winning director and playwright whose fill-in-the-blanks comedy Villain: DeBlanks has been seen in New York City, Los Angeles and London. As a director, Billy has worked throughout the metro NYC area, staging several world premieres for the Midtown International Theatre Festival, as well as small venues around NYC & New Jersey including Theatre Row, FRINGE NYC, and The Attic Ensemble. A member of the Dramatists Guild, Billy is the author of several plays (his script Blood & Oil is currently represented by the Freedman Agency), and a series of original TYA pieces. His first commissioned work, Bartholomew Fair, New Jersey -- a 90-minute comedy-in-verse -- enjoyed runs in NJ and NYC. Originally from Maine, he has a Bachelor's in Performance and a Masters in Directing from UMaine, studied educational theatre at NYU, and is frequently the host at events where the first choice was unavailable.

Eddie Capuano (performer/support) is an actor, comedian and improv performer. Some favorite roles include: Bill in Lobby Hero, Dale in The Temperamentals, Li'l Charles in August: Osage County, Rocky in The Rocky Horror Show, Toddy in Take Me Out, Michal in The Pillowman, Darius in Jeffrey,  and Millet in Fuddy Meers. He is excited to be part of DeBlanks at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe!

(Kids are fun and all, but what about the grown-ups?)

(Funny you should ask. We agree that mature audiences also need some immature fun! To that end we will also be presenting a couple of adults-only, late-evening pop-up performances. We are hoping the venue agrees to one of the adult performances being a 100% benefit for a local literacy or children's charity. "The weirder (and dirtier) the suggestions are, the funnier the show becomes!" -Adam Feldman, TimeOut New York)
