Happy Holidays!

2023 has been a banner year for Washington Women in Jazz. We celebrated our (lucky) 13th annual festival, with a residency at Blues Alley, numerous concerts, and our largest Emerging Artist Showcase yet! We supported 22 women and non-binary students from across the country with rehearsals and a sold out, turn-the-room-over, double set of their music.

We created The Turnaround, a new magazine and journal featuring women and non-binary artists in jazz and improvised music, with articles, artwork, and interviews from the community we have built for the last 13 years. Those conversations inspired the The Turnaround Podcast, released in October, featuring monthly interviews, stories, and live music with artists who have performed on the Washington Women in Jazz Festival.

2024 brings even more content and events! Get ready for the second issue of The Turnaround, more episodes of The Turnaround Podcast, and recorded music releases on Strange Woman Records from WWJF favorites, Leigh Pilzer's Seven-Pointed Star, Amy K Bormet, and Karine Chapdelaine. Our 14th annual festival will continue to feature the Emerging Artist Showcase, jam sessions, workshops, and, of course, concerts from WWJF artists.

This winter our community fundraising goal is $2500:

$50 will support an article in The Turnaround Magazine (5)
$100 will support travel expenses for an Emerging Artist (10)
$250 will support our website fees for a year (1)
$500 will support workshops and jam sessions at WWJF (2)

We need your financial support to continue making these Washington Women in Jazz projects a success, please give today.

We can't wait to see you again in March 2024!

Part zine, part journal, part archive: The Turnaround

Washington Women in Jazz is pleased to expand into the literary world with its development of The Turnaround, a new literary magazine highlighting the beauty and living history of our community. The Turnaround aims to amplify a cross-section of our culture: reviews, interviews, and detailed academic histories of notable women in jazz will run alongside pieces that would be at home in a cut-and-paste zine. The Turnaround will release its first volume in March 2023.

“Artists lead the charge on actively being a part of the community. Always. Being able to have the space, and then being able to document, consistently, the things that we're doing in this community… we're creating ourselves, and creating our community, on the spot. Spontaneous community creation. That's, to me, the biggest power of jazz, and a huge power upon which the DC jazz community is totally well-placed to expand.”
