Written In Air is a new audio magazine connecting everyone everywhere through sound, stories and the human heart.

ISSUE 1 ~ summer 2025

The magazine features audio works of nonfiction, documentary, essay, sound art and more. Written In Air is for listeners who want to go somewhere and feel something. It is armchair travel for the human heart. You’ll connect with people all around the world, and alight with your ears.

This self-funded first issue can be listened to digitally, either through buying a album on Bandcamp or by following weekly on Substack. But you can also buy paper magazines that accompany the audio or cassette tapes featuring the audio.

Audio Cassettes and Magazines of Issue 1

In this inaugural campaign, we're looking to build and lay the foundations for the future of not only this magazine, but the future of narrative audio. Written In Air wants to be the home for the type of storytelling that is treasured among listeners, but becoming more scarce. There are few homes for unique, finely crafted audio works on the airwaves or the podcast space. This magazine wants to change that, and become the destination for both talented makers to showcase their work, and for listeners to find these types of stories.

We're not only looking to build a community of audio lovers and makers around this project, we also want it to support other independent artists — designers, musicians, visual artists, photographers — who's work is also featured and adds to listening experience.

Right now, we'd like to build a base of donors or subscribers at what we consider the an 'annual level'  of $100 a year. The goal is to release quarterly, one issue per season, with more than half a dozen works in future issues. Donors at that annual level would get digital access to all quarterly issues. We'd love to make that release cycle a reality, and need your support in order to get there.

Donate or subscribe to be entered to win a vintage, restored NATIONAL RX-PS21 stereo radio/cassette player

Current annual subscribers from Substack are automatically entered into our current giveaway for a really cool vintage cassette player that's been fully restored by JRMarket. But, if you've made a Bandcamp purchase, you can enter too by donating the difference between your annual subscription level, and the retail cost of your purchase. You can check out the rewards section of this campaign for more info.

Your support is so appreciated, and we hope to keep bringing you great audio for decades to come.

Enter by August 31, 2025 to win a restored, vintage cassette player to listen to Written In Air!

This 'Japan only' model of the National RX-PS21 was lovingly restored by JR Market, a Los Angeles-based shop that specialises on vintage analogue audio hardware. It's stereo blaster, which is rare in this small size, meaning you'll hear the works from the magazine as they were meant to be heard. But it is also something cool to have around your home.

Cassette players from the 1980s and 1990s are truly sought after by modern 'tapeheads' as they used higher quality parts compared to the units produced today. (Fun fact: just about every modern cassette player, whether it's $25 or $200 uses the same internal mechanism!) Known as Panasonic in most of the West, National was the brand name the company operated under in Japan and Asia until around 2004. This rare and uniquely restored unit retails at $225 USD, and the winner will also receive a cassette bundle (retail $40 USD + shipping).

There are a few ways to enter this giveaway...

3) If you've already purchased physical merch, you can donate the difference here, tax free. So, if you bought a cassette/magazine bundle for $40, donate $60 and receive an entry. If you bought the digital album for $20, donate $80 for an entry. Donors will also receive a free digital version of anything Written In Air releases over the the next year via Bandcamp and discount codes for physical merch over that same time.

4) If you don't want to listen to the magazine but you are a tapehead and would a chance to win this cassette player, donate any amount of at least $100 and you'll be entered!
