13 TALES OF LOVE & REVENGE is an exciting new musical comedy with an original story and book by Chris Mixon, and featuring the beautiful songs of the indie pop band, The Pierces. 13 TALES OF LOVE & REVENGE follows two sisters--Annie and Mary Carter--as they are reunited in their poor factory town of Lonesome, Mississippi. Raised in these swamps, Annie returns home from her failed singing career--pursued by the FBI--to discover that her sister, Mary, is in equally desperate circumstances--married to an abusive, cheating man. After a lifetime of hard luck, these sisters set out to take their fates into their own hands, shooting it out with the corrupt local Sheriff, the FBI, and, yes, the mob.
Written in the tradition of those wonderful "B" movies from the 1970s, 13 TALES OF LOVE & REVENGE looks back at a time when gritty, original stories (BADLANDS, NORMA RAE, BILLY JACK, DOG DAY AFTERNOON--and many more) told tales of the common man (or, in this case, UNcommon WOMEN) standing up against "the man". Before there were computers, cell phones or complex forensic science, there were only police scanners, CB radios, fast cars, and true grit.
As a comedy, 13 TALES OF LOVE & REVENGE both celebrates and pokes a little fun at the gritty style and archetypes in these films. These stories often had bold, quirky "social messages" attached to them--which has contributed to many of them achieving cult status. Defying the law was sometimes necessary for justice to prevail over prejudice, racism, bigotry and disenfranchisement. 13 TALES OF LOVE & REVENGE carries on this tradition with themes that promote the empowerment of women, people of color, and members of the LGBT community. Part "Thelma and Louise", part "Ode to Billy Joe", part "Cool Hand Luke", and part "Smokey and the Bandit", 13 TALES OF LOVE & REVENGE is unique among "jukebox musicals". It's an original "American" story, featuring the unique and beautiful songs by The Pierces, together showing us that our differences are truly what make us heroes.
