About

Bass and collaborative artist Andrew Munn founded A Circle in 2024 to incubate and develop projects across borders, disciplines, and aesthetics. A Circle initiates ambitious works that grow from the classical music tradition to address contemporary themes of ecology and power.

In 2026, A Circle will present postWinterreise on globally recognized stages for classical and experimental music, including Tanglewood's Linde Center, the Queen Elisabeth Music Chapel, and the Sansusī Festival.

Our work is informed by periods of research, workshop, and rehearsal that extend beyond standard industry production calendars. To sustain this independent artistic vision, we rely on the support of individuals who share our commitment to the arts as a mode of inquiry into historical and contemporary questions of ecology and power.

A Circle convenes the following projects:

Berlin Verses
with, Jacob Greenberg, Adam Rothenberg, Jordan Freeman
A political and poetic adaptation of Hanns Eisler and Bertolt Brecht's Hollywooder Liederbuch reframed in the complex web of complicity, privilege, and oppression at the heart of contemporary ecological and social questions.

Michelangelo and the Moderns
with Julia Modes, Bálint Zsoldos, and Seoyon MacDonald
Composed in 1974, Shostakovich's setting of eleven Michelangelo sonnets offers a symphonic meditation on art, love, power, legacy, and mortality. This program is framed by an art historical lecture tracing themes of Michelangelo's poems and art as they reappear in the abstract visual art of Cy Twombly.

Anthropocene
A meditation on the Anthropocene, composed by Nina C. Young on texts by Andrew Munn and Antonio Stoppani. Part ritual opera, part oratorio, the work offers an intimate reflection on the geologic scale of the human footprint.

Rupture
a song cycle by composer Andile Khumalo on the poetry of Ishion Hutchinson, exploring the legacy of white supremacy and racist hierarchies in colonized populations.

Cycles

by and with Conrad Winslow
Cycles is the working title for a song cycle by the Alaskan composer Conrad Winslow. Winslow set the poem A Certain Kind of Eden by Kay Ryan, for Andrew and Jacob in 2023. A song cycle in cyclical time and growth began.
for voice, piano

Exile
with Alla Gutnikova
Exile is the working title for a song cycle on the poetry of Alla Gutnikova. Imagined as a companion/counter-piece for Shostakovich's Suite on Verses by Michelangelo, the cycle deals with exile, power, political violence and identity.
