The four-thousand year old Jewish tradition is experiencing a profound spiritual crisis. This participatory performance will explore the phenomenon of soul-loss that is enabling many members of the Jewish community to justify crimes against humanity as they are committed on the world stage. Together we will work with the mystical powers of Kabbalah to communicate with our ancestors and heal our tradition from within while reckoning with Judaism’s contemporary legacy of power-worship and destruction. The project will lean into the camp and religious theatricality of exorcism, using playful absurdity to make space for participants to engage with an immensity of grief. The exorcism format makes use of ritual technologies to open a trans-historical space for dreaming of a Judaism that prioritizes safety and dignity for all people.
