About

Founded in 2023, AFFEKT Dance Company is a Brooklyn-based collective dedicated to igniting creativity and empowering individuality through contemporary dance. Led by Artistic Director and choreographer Janina Young, AFFEKT builds platforms for artists and audiences to connect through movement as a shared language of humanity. Our mission is to inspire and foster authentic voices, honoring dance history while pushing the boundaries of contemporary performance.

At the heart of AFFEKT is collaboration. Each work is created in dialogue with the company’s dancers, whose diverse training backgrounds, from release and floorwork to improvisation and somatic practices, shape a movement language that is both technically rigorous and deeply personal. The result is choreography that merges precision with vulnerability, creating resonant performances where audiences recognize fragments of their own stories.

Our activities reflect this commitment to access and experimentation. AFFEKT hosts community classes in New York City, ChoreoLAB sessions for peer-to-peer research and exchange, and open workshops that invite movers of all levels to step into creative practice. Performances range from evening-length productions to site-specific improvisational installations, designed to blur the lines between stage and community. In each context, AFFEKT seeks to cultivate curiosity, courage, and a sense of belonging.

Since its founding, the company has self-produced original works, participated in NYC festivals, and collaborated with guest choreographers to expand its scope of voices. Looking ahead, AFFEKT continues to develop evening-length productions, site-specific projects, and partnerships with institutions to share dance as both an art form and a tool for cultural connection.

We believe dance is more than performance; it is an act of trust, individuality, and community. By creating spaces for artists to experiment and for audiences to reflect, AFFEKT affirms that movement is not only art, but also a mirror of who we are and who we might become.
