About the Play

The InterCircle is thrilled to present the New York City premiere of Aftermath, a gripping play by David Zax. Set in 2011, Aftermath explores the collision of intergenerational conflict and moral responsibility. It is a story of life’s priorities, family, and the intimate, often heart-wrenching ethical choices that define us.

The Production

Aftermath is coming to the Mezzanine Theatre at the A.R.T./NY Theatres for a limited run in October and November 2026. This professional, state-of-the-art space in the heart of the city will provide our design team with a beautiful home to create the world of the play. We’re in the midst of putting together an amazing cast (exciting announcements coming soon!) and a phenomenal creative team to help spring this play off the page!

Synopsis

Aftermath follows Josh Goldman, a young journalist who has just survived 
a kidnapping in Afghanistan. Now safely returned home to his upper-class family
in Washington DC,  he struggles to reconnect with his parents and rebuild 
a sense of normalcy. The story gradually reveals how this ambitious 
28-year-old found the courage to take on his most dangerous assignment 
and what it ultimately cost him.

The Journey

In September 2021, we set out to build an artist-driven project from the ground up. We spent two years searching for a script that combined a current, piercing relevance with profound heart. We read dozens of plays, maintained a meticulous spreadsheet of new works, and debated the merits of countless stories.

The search ended in October 2023, over a lunch meeting about an entirely different project, David Zax asked Colton if he was directing anything in New York. Colton shared that he’d been searching for the right play. Almost offhandedly, David mentioned he’d written one that felt more relevant now than ever. As soon as we read it, we knew: This was our play.  We had found the piece that spoke to our mission.

Over the next two years, we gathered industry colleagues, actors, designers, and friends for a series of informal readings. The response was immediate and electric. A community began to form around the work.
Momentum built. Supporters stepped forward.
What began as a question—can we do this?—became a clear and resounding yes.

Now, that early spark has grown into a full production. 
 Aftermath will premiere in October 2026!
