Amber Sloan is a New York City-based choreographer with "strong and intriguing approaches to dance as work, as an eye on the world, as life" (Carrie Stern, Brooklyn Daily Eagle). Her work, described as "stunning" (Sophie Ernst, Show Business Weekly), has been presented at a variety of venues including Dixon Place, Roulette Theater, Soaking WET at the West End Theater, Brooklyn Arts Exchange, Danspace Project at St. Mark's Church (DraftWorks and Food for Thought), Judson Church, Spoke the Hub, 92nd Street Y, The Flea Theater, Green Space, Dance Safari, the EstroGenius Festival, as well as an 18 year commissioning relationship with the DanceNow Festival. Most recently, her work, Golden Delicious, premiered at Centro Cultural “Los Tallares” A.C. in Mexico City.
Sloan is the 2020-2021 "Emerging Commissioned New Jersey Choreographer" for Dance on the Lawn. She was a 2015 Bessie Schonberg Resident at The Yard on Martha’s Vineyard and has received space grants from organizations including Gibney Dance Center, Brooklyn Arts Exchange, Spoke the Hub, Dance Theater Workshop (now New York Live Arts), Mulberry Street Theater, The Field, DanceNow Silo, Mana Contemporary in Jersey City, Cherry Valley Artworks in Cherry Valley, New York, and Concord Summer Stages in Concord, Massachusetts. Sloan has received funding from the Jerome Robbins Foundation annually since 2008.
As a performer, Sloan has been a member of The Bang Group since 2002, appearing in prestigious theaters and festivals in both Europe and the United States. She has assisted David Parker in his work with Anna Sokolow Theater Dance Ensemble, the Juilliard School, Barnard College, Hofstra University, Marymount Manhattan College, and Hunter College. In addition to The Bang Group, Sloan has had the pleasure of performing with Doug Elkins & Friends, Keely Garfield, Sara Hook Dances and Stephen Koplowitz. She recently had the honor of performing in the revival of James Waring's 1972 solo Tender Buttons.
Sloan teaches dance composition at the Ailey School, serves on the board of Dance Omi International Collective, and co-directs Women in Motion NYC. She is the Community Developer for Arts on Site and is a founding member of the Dance Rising NYC Collective. Sloan holds a BFA in Dance from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign where she was honored with the 2015 Beverly Blossom/Carey Erickson Alumni Dance Award.
