Anita Brown is an award-winning composer, arranger, conductor & teaching artist. She was awarded 2022 & 2019 NYSCA Individual Artist Composer Commissions for
Red Moon Rising (Fractured Atlas, fiscal sponsor) and
Hart Island Suite (The Hart Island Project,fiscal sponsor) respectively. In 2020 she was awarded Project Grants from NYFA, NewMusicUSA and
Anita Brown Jazz Orchestra was cited among DownBeat Magazine's
Rising Big Bands. Under her baton the band premiered the latter,
#hartislandsuite, presented by JazzForumArts in the 2021 Sunset Jazz Concert Series at The Lyndhurst Mansion in Tarrytown, NY on August 21st. ABJO has been performing in Metro New York since 2000.
Anita writes programmatic tone poems. Fusing her love of jazz, R&B and classical music she weaves unique orchestrations, telling stories and evoking imagery. Her 2022 commission,
Red Moon Rising, was inspired by a most unusual sight, as the scarlet red crescent moon rose from the black horizon at midnight at Montauk Point.
With the onset of Spring 2022 Anita has embarked upon a fundraising campaign to finance a recording project twenty years in the making:

Anita has been commissioned by The Count Basie, Jon Faddis and Westchester Jazz Orchestras, USF's Center for Jazz Composition, The Frank Wess Nonet, The Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra, has delivered lectures at professional conferences, colleges and high schools, served as adjudicator for state jazz band and college level arranging competitions and has taught at a number of area colleges.
In 2011 Brown composed and produced the premiere of
Stand: A Symphony for Jazz Orchestra, a large-scale work in five movements commemorating and depicting the American experience of out national tragedy on 9/11. Her 2022 recording project will include this five-movement work,
Hart Island Suite and other unrecorded works totaling 14 titles.
