News from Curbside TheatreDear Curbside Supporter, Hello. We are reaching out with some updates on Curbside Theatre. As we move forward in our process, we wanted to let you know that we are both monitoring the effects of Covid-19 on our community and also paying close attention to and participating in the local and national conversation about racial justice. Since we are committed to ensuring that access to our FREE performances is equitable within the NWA community we are also currently strategizing about how to make that happen most effectively. We look forward to bringing our show to the community in July and beyond. Thank you for helping us exceed our initial fundraising goal. The campaign closed earlier this week and your support of this first step allows us to engage a total of 10 theatre artists in meaningful, paid creative work. We look forward to bringing a sense of joy back to our community through the powerful lens of live story-telling. Thank you. Laura, Kholoud, Mischa, and Michael The Curbsiders curbsidetheatre@gmail.com |
Update from Curbside TheatreHello Curbside Supporter, Thank you so much for being a part of this exciting journey of hope through LIVE THEATRE. Your commitment to helping individual artists directly is both generous and forward-thinking and you are a valued team of innovators working towards a new way of thinking about live performance. Some Updates... Local and National Press We’ve had some great interviews from all our local news including Good Day NWA, The Idle Class, The Fayetteville Flyer, The NWA Demorat-Gazette, KUAF and the Walton Arts Center’s heARTS To Home web series. We were thrilled to receive some national press out of New York via Front Row Center. In her article, A Curbside Response to an Altered Theater Landscape, Brittany Crowell empowers us all with the following call to action: “Let us think more about those who need the theater to survive. Let us think about the artists who need theater to eat and pay their bills. Let us think about the audience who need to know what it means to connect, who need release and relief. Let us think about this moment as a moment of possibility and innovation, spatially, technologically, globally.” And we couldn’t agree more! Do you have a national press contact? Send them our way so we can share our story with a wider audience! Curbside Theatre As A National Movement In just a few short weeks, we have been approached by individual theatre artists and companies alike from Austin, San Antonio, Iowa City, and Nashville, all of whom are interested in doing their own versions of CT for their communities. One of our big goals was to be able to share what we have learned and gained through this work so that we can pass it on to other artists who want to get back to the work of creating. This will be a tremendous amount of work for the greater good, but we are intrepidly doing the labor of coming up with safety procedures for others to use as a model, while simultaneously creating this new piece of art. Our Growing Ensemble of Artists We have begun to add other artists to our creative process, which has not only given them the gift of artistic nourishment but has provided them much needed paychecks. Na’Tosha Devon, most recently seen in TheatreSquared’s production of The Royale has joined us for some devising sessions. Since our work is largely online, we have plans to include artists from other parts of the country in order to get them engaged and working as well. In addition, you may have read about Chyna, our set and props assistant, a senior at the University of Arkansas, and we are thrilled to be employing her and giving her a chance to grow as a young designer. We want to get more artists back to work in a meaningful way. The Home Stretch You have helped us so much and we are at the home stretch of our goal of raising $3,500 this week. Would you please consider sending an email or text about our project to 10 targeted friends asking them to donate to our project? If you’ve already done that--thank you so much! Perhaps you could send a follow up nudge if you don’t see their name on our list of supporters here: https://www.curbsidetheatre.com/supporters? The link to donate is here: https://fundraising.fracturedatlas.org/arkansasstaged/campaigns/3578 It’s a no-cost/big impact way to help us out as we move forward. Let us know when you share so we can thank you! We’ve included a sample message below to make it easy to copy, paste, and send… If you haven’t already done so, go follow us on social media: In the meantime, stay safe, stay home, wear a mask, wash your hands, and above all: be kind. Thanks so much. The Curbsiders ******** SAMPLE EMAIL: Hi _________, I am reaching out to let you in on a really innovative theatre project happening in Northwest Arkansas that I learned about recently. It’s called “Curbside Theatre,” and, as they say--it’s like pizza delivery...but better for the heart! ArkansasStaged is the creative force behind it and they are creating a live theatrical performance to debut at individual households across the area in the coming months. It will engage underserved audiences and employ furloughed artists whose livelihoods have been put on hold indefinitely. You can read more about the project and their goals here: I supported them and am hoping that you will consider joining me in this work.
