News from Curbside Theatre

Dear Curbside Supporter,

Hello. We are reaching out with some updates on Curbside Theatre.

As we move forward in our process, we wanted to let you know that we are both monitoring the effects of Covid-19 on our community and also paying close attention to and participating in the local and national conversation about racial justice.

Since we are committed to ensuring that access to our FREE performances is equitable within the NWA community we are also currently strategizing about how to make that happen most effectively. We look forward to bringing our show to the community in July and beyond.

Thank you for helping us exceed our initial fundraising goal. The campaign closed earlier this week and your support of this first step allows us to engage a total of 10 theatre artists in meaningful, paid creative work.

We look forward to bringing a sense of joy back to our community through the powerful lens of live story-telling.

Thank you.

Laura, Kholoud, Mischa, and Michael

Update from Curbside Theatre

Hello Curbside Supporter,

Thank you so much for being a part of this exciting journey of hope through LIVE THEATRE. Your commitment to helping individual artists directly is both generous and forward-thinking and you are a valued team of innovators working towards a new way of thinking about live performance.

Some Updates...

Local and National Press
We’ve had some great interviews from all our local news including Good Day NWA, The Idle Class, The Fayetteville Flyer, The NWA Demorat-Gazette, KUAF and the Walton Arts Center’s  heARTS To Home web series

We were thrilled to receive some national press out of  New York via Front Row Center. In her article, A Curbside Response to an Altered Theater Landscape, Brittany Crowell empowers us all with the following call to action:

“Let us think more about those who need the theater to survive.  Let us think about the artists who need theater to eat and pay their bills.  Let us think about the audience who need to know what it means to connect, who need release and relief.  Let us think about this moment as a moment of possibility and innovation, spatially, technologically, globally.”

And we couldn’t agree more!

Do you have a national press contact? Send them our way so we can share our story with a wider audience!

Curbside Theatre As A National Movement
In just a few short weeks, we have been approached by individual theatre artists and companies alike from Austin, San Antonio, Iowa City, and Nashville, all of whom are interested in doing their own versions of CT for their communities. One of our big goals was to be able to share what we have learned and gained through this work so that we can pass it on to other artists who want to get back to the work of creating. This will be a tremendous amount of work for the greater good, but we are intrepidly doing the labor of coming up with safety procedures for others to use as a model, while simultaneously creating this new piece of art.

Our Growing Ensemble of Artists
We have begun to add other artists to our creative process, which has not only given them the gift of artistic nourishment but has provided them much needed paychecks. Na’Tosha Devon, most recently seen in TheatreSquared’s production of The Royale has joined us for some devising sessions. Since our work is largely online, we have plans to include artists from other parts of the country in order to get them engaged and working as well. In addition, you may have read about Chyna, our set and props assistant, a senior at the University of Arkansas, and we are thrilled to be employing her and giving her a chance to grow as a young designer. We want to get more artists back to work in a meaningful way.

The Home Stretch
You have helped us so much and we are at the home stretch of our goal of raising $3,500 this week. Would you please consider sending an email or text about our project to 10 targeted friends asking them to donate to our project? If you’ve already done that--thank you so much! Perhaps you could send a follow up nudge if you don’t see their name on our list of supporters here: https://www.curbsidetheatre.com/supporters?

It’s a no-cost/big impact way to help us out as we move forward. Let us know when you share so we can thank you!

We’ve included a sample message below to make it easy to copy, paste, and send…

If you haven’t already done so, go follow us on social media:

In the meantime, stay safe, stay home, wear a mask, wash your hands, and above all: be kind.

Thanks so much.

Hi _________,

I am reaching out to let you in on a really innovative theatre project happening in Northwest Arkansas that I learned about recently. It’s called “Curbside Theatre,” and, as they say--it’s like pizza delivery...but better for the heart! ArkansasStaged is the creative force behind it and they are creating a live theatrical performance to debut at individual households across the area in the coming months.

It will engage underserved audiences and employ furloughed artists whose livelihoods have been put on hold indefinitely.

You can read more about the project and their goals here:

I supported them and am hoping that you will consider joining me in this work.
What if we could harness the power of LIVE THEATRE, right now, today, and use it to help HEAL our community?
Every day has been a battle. Every day we face an onslaught of new information. Every day we remind our friends and our loved ones to “stay at home,” “keep a safe distance,” and “wear a mask” as we fight to keep hope alive.

Well, today we have good news to share...

Theatre artists have always been innovators and we’ve conceived of a new way.
Without the ability to gather in buildings or in large groups, we bring together the collective and adventurous spirit of a few ambitious artists and ask for your support of our new idea: curbside theatre.

What is "curbside theatre" and what’s the play about?
Curbside theatre is a new way of presenting live performance: you stay inside and we come to you. It’s like delivery pizza, but better for your heart. And in the tradition of past ArkansasStaged shows, this work will be presented for free and funded by generous donations and support from our community.

The new play we’ve been creating was inspired by the idea of a “theatrical care package” and the deep belief in the power of art to heal. Our ensemble of professional theatre artists -- Michael Bell, Mischa Hutchings, Kholoud Sawaf, and Laura Shatkus, with contributions from Adrienne Dawes, playwright and producer -- hope to utilize this work to reach new audiences and regular theatre-goers alike. Through online content-building sessions, we’ve been devising since mid-March and are exploring themes of space and time travel (and the accompanying isolation), the musical energy of pop power ballads of the 1980s, and the heroic hygiene of a fastidious clown. The story follows an isolated space traveller as she studies human beings in their respective dwellings while questioning what it means to be alone together.

We hope to make you laugh, to engage your sense of wonder, and to bring you hope in absurd times.

How does it work?
An audience member can sign up for a performance by visiting: www.curbsidetheatre.com. We’ll call them to collaborate with us on the best outdoor playing area adjacent to their living space. Then we’ll make a socially-distant site visit to ensure performer and audience safety. We’ll email some clues about participating in the journey of the play and we’ll schedule the performance time. That’s it! It’s like a singing telegram meets a birthday clown meets socially distant Christmas carolers -- all mixed into one big pot.

How will we stay safe?
Actors will always maintain 15 feet of distance from you (and each other) and their playing space will be delineated and cordoned off for safety.

Where will your funds go?
Your support will deliver theatrical care packages to your friends and neighbors. Initially, we plan to present 30 free performances on a first-come, first-served basis to individual households in Northwest Arkansas. But we truly hope to see the work continue into the fall beyond.

In addition, we need your help to give us the time and space to finalize the creative process and rehearse the play so that we can bring it to the community.

By joining us, you will be pivotal in creating a brand new contemporary play and supporting an innovative process for rehearsing and performing. Artists will be able to safely create and perform again and audiences can reap the benefits of live theatre.

Most importantly, you’ll be sending joy to your neighbors and friends. And that’s good for all of us.

With your help, the joy can multiply.
Through widespread community support, we foresee a future in which this free theatrical care package can be sent to hundreds of households and employ many more local artists. The more support we can raise for this project, the more free shows we can offer to our community and the more theatre artists we can employ.

Join us in bringing the joy of live performance to a brand new theatrical landscape.
