Right the Future is an arts-based rehabilitation and literacy initiative designed to equip incarcerated youth with the tools to process their experiences, develop communication skills and build confidence as they prepare to reenter society. We believe that storytelling and self-expression are powerful pathways to healing, and through our workshops in creative writing, spoken word and public speaking, we provide these young people with a structured and supportive space to explore their identities, articulate their emotions, and reclaim their narratives.
For many of our participants, this program marks the first time they have been encouraged to see their stories as valuable. The ability to express themselves clearly—whether through writing, speech or performance—is not just an artistic skill; it is a life skill that fosters emotional regulation and personal development. By strengthening these abilities, we help them learn conflict resolution strategies and gain the confidence to engage in positive decision-making.
Education is a crucial aspect of our mission. Many of the young people we serve have struggled in traditional school environments, often due to instability, or learning challenges. Through creative workshops that integrate literacy development with hands-on storytelling exercises, we make learning engaging and relevant to their lived experiences. Studies show that improved literacy directly correlates with lower recidivism rates and greater success in employment and education. Right the Future leverages the power of the arts to bridge these gaps, ensuring that participants leave the program better equipped to pursue further education and career opportunities.
The program’s impact extends beyond individual participants—it benefits families, communities and the justice system as a whole. By giving young people the skills to express themselves productively, Right the Future helps reduce behavioral conflicts, encourages positive social interactions and provides a constructive outlet for frustration and pain. Our goal is to ensure that when these youth leave the juvenile justice system, they do so with a renewed sense of purpose and the communication tools necessary to advocate for themselves, secure opportunities and avoid reoffending.
