I make abstract drawings, collages, and paintings in a variety of traditional materials. The color palette includes simple black on white in some works and vibrant color in others. I build forms using repeated series of lines, marks, or gestures and sometimes leave areas of ground untouched. Physical forms from nature, weather patterns and phenomena, and ordinary objects inspire the forms. My perception of movement and change drive my mark making process. When working in color, my color choices are inspired by my emotions and the colors I notice out there in the world. In the paintings I combine those two sources to come up with combinations using my imagination. While I am inspired by these things and ideas, the process of working is spontaneous and intuitive. The final images are often ambiguous with hints of figuration offering viewers multiple possible conclusions.
In my day-to-day life I make an effort to notice the vibrations and reverberations of the living world around me, and during my studio time I work to express my sense of those reverberations. I see this expression as an acknowledgment and recognition of a pervasive consciousness. My process often involves a kind of deliberate gestural imitation of organic growth of plants or animals building bit by bit; sometimes it involves repeated movements that one might recognize as waves. I am motivated by curiosity to see if I can ever understand what is going on here —in the ever-changing, never-static world of objects, beings, air, and light— and to see if my expression of it resonates as true within me and with others. The experiments are ongoing.
