Celebrating our 15th anniversary, Artists at Play is a Los Angeles-based organization dedicated to programming that explores the Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) experience. Our work demonstrates the humanity and complexity of diverse AAPI communities, providing meaningful and nuanced representation that builds understanding between people. Since 2011, Artists at Play has reached audiences across Southern California with our ticketed, low-cost and free programs which include mainstage productions, theatre for families and youth, new play development and special events.

This fall, Artists at Play presents The Dance and the Railroad by David Henry Hwang, utilizing the beauty and athleticism of Chinese Opera to tell a personal story of friendship and how art intersects with history.

Set on a California mountain during the 1867 Chinese railroad workers strike, The Dance and the Railroad explores the lives of two laborers: the optimistic and idealistic Ma, a recent immigrant to California hoping to make his fortune; and the pragmatic and independent Lone, a former Chinese opera actor who was forced to leave the opera troupe by his parents to work in America. While taking refuge away from the labor camp, Lone teaches Ma how to perform Chinese opera. As their friendship builds, Lone and Ma reminisce about the homes they left behind and what it means to chase the American Dream. Utilizing the beauty and athleticism of Chinese Opera, The Dance and the Railroad tells a personal story of friendship and how art intersects with history.

Featuring Leonard Wu and Scott Keiji Takei, and understudies Tony Jin and Kosi Eguchi.
