A three-part documentary short that tells the stories of three Asian fathers: Danny Cortez – a Southern Baptist Filipino, James – a Korean Christian, and Khalid Querishi – a Pakistani Muslim – as they navigate fatherhood and faith in light of discovering the surprising truth about their children’s sexual and gender identities.
On June 28th, 2021 Asian Pride Project, Clara Lee (API Rainbow Parents), Marsha Aizumi (PFLAG San Gabriel Valley) & Laurin Mayeno (Out & Proud Families) presented a special screening of NEVER STAND DOWN: Featuring the Cortez Family. This virtual screening was followed by a heartwarming conversation with Pastor Danilo Cortez and his family as they discuss their introspective, challenging and inspiring journey.
Over a 2-year period, Asian Pride Project (APP), an LGBTQ+ arts & advocacy organization filmed a series of interviews chronicling the stories of fathers navigating fatherhood and faith in light of discovering the surprising truth about their children’s sexual and gender identities.
In the first edition of Never Stand Down, a Filipino American father and pastor reflects on the pivotal moments that drove him to question the anti-LGBTQ sermons he had espoused his entire life. His change of heart only intensified when his youngest son came out to him as a gay teen and sparked a national standoff with the largest Protestant denomination in America, the Southern Baptist Church.
