Askew Theatre Company's Mission is to support playwrights who are developing new works and presenting theatre that explores our humanity in queer, quirky, dark or in an otherwise askew manner. We are also committed to presenting theatre by queer and people of color whose works explore the world in brave and challenging ways.
Our Vision is to produce meaningful theatre that aims to entertain, enlighten and inspire critical thinking that moves audiences to take action towards making a positive difference in our society.
THE FORMAT - The Page to Stage New Plays Workshop is a program that identifies a new play in the early stages of a playwright's process and helps guide it towards production in front of an audience. Playwrights work with Askew Theatre to develop the play according to the writer's original vision and intent. The end result is a staged reading of the script-in-progress or a full production of the finished work on stage.
- Askew also presents plays that have been previously produced. These plays are chosen according to our mission to "present theatre that explores our humanity in queer, quirky, dark or in an otherwise askew manner." What does that mean? It means these productions are re-imagined and contextualized to reflect our mission of "presenting theatre by queer and people of color."
- The Out of the Box 10-Minute Play Festival runs every other year. Playwrights submit their best 10-minute play to be included in our festival. Writers are encouraged to present a full story in 10 minutes. Prizes are awarded to the Best Play, Best Director and Best Actor/Actress, determined by a vote from the audience.
THE SEASON
At our launch, we hope to be able to produce at least 2 plays per season. Each season will guarantee that at least one of the plays is by a playwright from the Page to Stage Workshop. Ultimately, and with financial support, our goal is to work up towards a 4- to 5-play season and incorporate the 10-Minute Play Festival into a yearly fundraiser for the theatre.
