Ballaro Dance is entering its 10th Season and we continue to reach new audiences, new MOVERS, and new collaborators through each artistic adventure. We are still as passionate as we were 10 years ago, but our vision has grown larger than we could have ever imagined. Ballaro Dance continues to redefine how to effectively share dance through sensory-based experiences; we enable audience to be participants which deepens the impact dance can have on a community. Here's one way we fulfilled our mission this year...
Throughout 2023, we continued our ongoing collaboration with Zoran Prodanovic of Ready Steady Cinema. Zoran's unique approach to dance on camera brings our above mentioned vision to life skillfully in a virtual platform while increasing our ability to access more people in more places. This year we launched:
- A 3-part docuseries about Embedded Memories and its tandem Community Imprints project,
- "The Distance" series including three new films which premiered in October, and
- Zoran joined us at SUNY Brockport in August where we filmed two new collaborations on campus with Community MOVERS who participated in our week-long dance intensive. You can SEE JE DA VU as a new release, and the second film, Silent Disco, will be launching in mid-December so...stay tuned!
Our collaborative partnership with Zoran has continued to blossom since our first project together in December of 2018 (happy five years, Zoran!) and it's just one of the things we are looking to INVEST in this year: developing sensory-rich dance content that can be accessible to anyone, anywhere. We've seen the power in building and maintaining our virtual community throughout the pandemic and as we continue to hone our craft with Zoran, we look forward to premiering quarterly films in 2024, returning to our SEE Ballaro Dance series on YouTube, and creating a major film project together.
This year we ask YOU to also INVEST - not just in the future of Ballaro Dance - but in the future of Dance, with a capital D, and the incredible work led by Ballaro Dance which is shaping the journey: we are an organization leading the charge in redefining what dance is, who can access it, who participates in it, and how its seen, felt, and experienced. We prioritize Community & Collaboration at the core of what we do and we are asking you to invest in us, our mission, and what matters most: bringing people together to SEE, MOVE, & SHARE with one another through dance. Please help us to do more in 2024!
Looking Back...Ballaro Dance was busy in 2023:
- We premiered a new duet at the QNZdanz(+): QUEENS OUTDOOR DANCE FESTIVAL in June.
- We traveled to SUNY Brockport (Brockport, NY) to lead SEE MOVE SHARE, a week-long intensive and performance project in August. Company MOVER/Rehearsal Assistant Hannah Dillenbeck taught alongside Marisa f. Ballaro working with local dancers on campus; they performed on stage with the Company in FULL CIRCLE at Hartwell Dance Theater culminating the experience. That week Zoran Prodanovic also joined the group for two days of filming to create two new dance films!
- We returned to Aquila's Nest Vineyards (Newtown, CT) to present Embedded Memories in August engaging with a intimate audience in the spectacular vineyard.
- We partnered with The Compost Collective to share both Embedded Memories and the Community Imprints project with the Forest Hills, Queens community at sunset in TCC's community garden in August.
- In October, we premiered The Distance, an evening-length piece inspired by the form, physicality, and finesse of boxing, at the Underground Theater at Abrons Arts Center in NYC. It was structured like a typical boxing match with 12 three-minute rounds with 60-second breaks in between. It was a knockout!
- "Vivaldi" was selected for the Dance Through the Lens film festival and was screened at the Museum of the Moving Image in Astoria, Queens in October.
- We continued our monthly FREE, open community classes as part of our ongoing MOVE programming all year long.
- We will close out 2023 with two events: our annual holiday collaboration with Lux Mea Women's Chorus on Saturday, December 9 in NYC and a virtual "Golden Eagles Only" viewing party launching the premiere of Silent Disco, our latest dance film, with the SUNY Brockport community.
Looking Forward...Already on deck for Ballaro Dance in 2024:
- "The Distance" has been selected for screening at the Experimental, Dance & Music Film Festival on January 31 at both Carlton Cinemas (Toronto, Canada) and the LA LIVE Regal Cinemas (Los Angeles.)
- Hannah Dillenbeck and Marina Vianello will perform "Amid the Wild" in the SoloDuo Festival (New York, NY) on February 9th produced by WHITEWAVE.
- Founding Artistic Director Marisa f. Ballaro was awarded a $9,575 Impact Grant from the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation to implement a virtual nationwide project, CF: Community Footprints, which will bring the "Community Imprints" project to the CF Community and culminate in a live outdoor performance in NYC in June of 2024.
- Ballaro Dance will continue designing new collaborative programming with 48 St.Stephen including both teaching and performance opportunities.
