The Barbara Romain Archive preserves and makes public the work of Barbara Romain (1948–2024), a Los Angeles painter who continued working for four decades after being diagnosed with retinitis pigmentosa in 1984, adapting her practice with braille-labeled paint and hand-cut stencils. We are cataloguing her paintings and papers, documenting five decades of exhibition history from primary sources, and digitizing at-risk photographic and audiovisual material. Our goal is a public exhibition with full accessibility - audio description, braille, and tactile interpretation - and an archive open to researchers.
