About

The Baroque Opera Workshop at Queens College (BOWQC) is held each summer at the Aaron Copland School of Music (CUNY) in Flushing, NY. This week-long intensive offers professional and pre-professional singers, string players, and basso continuo players the opportunity to deepen their understanding of Baroque opera through immersive training. Selected by audition, participants work closely with renowned teaching artists from both sides of the Atlantic and the Americas—chosen for their expertise and artistry—to refine their skills and explore the nuances of historical performance practice. The week concludes with a public performance for a diverse New York audience, featuring either a full opera or selected scenes, providing participants the chance to apply and refine the skills developed throughout the week. Offerings include: -Daily masterclasses and coachings in Baroque vocal style -Daily classes in stage gesture and theatre craft for opera singers -Study of Baroque repertoire and ornamentation for strings including violin, viola, viola da gamba & cello -Improvisation for players of basso continuo based on 16th and 17th century sources for Baroque harp, Baroque keyboards, and theorbo & Baroque guitar -Daily music rehearsals with full continuo The week's work culminates in a staged performance..
