After receiving nominations for two of the biggest awards at the largest arts festival in the world, Before The Drugs Kick In is following in the footsteps of Baby Reindeer and Fleabag by turning a solo show into an entire universe.
When I was 9 years old, a family member attempted suicide in front of me and I had no idea how to talk about what happened until I started performing stand-up comedy at 14.
Now, in my 30s, I started thinking about things from their perspective and I wrote a solo show called Before The Drugs Kick In, which the incredible Maria DeCotis brought to life. The solo show is about what this person’s life could’ve been like if they had the privilege to talk into a microphone instead of feeling so alone.
Our pilot will continue the work of the solo show while digging even deeper into the themes of mental health, capitalism, feminism, and the power of using your voice. Of course the pilot will be full of jokes and diverse characters too!
Your tax-deductible donation will help us take this heartfelt, important, and funny story from the stage to the screen so even more people can feel less alone when it comes to the most vulnerable moments of their life.Next Door Pictures, an award-winning production company, will be producing the pilot and we already have an incredible director and cinematography preparing to film!
‘Funny, thought provoking and sweet, time flies as you feel yourself entranced by a mind-blowing performance and leave the room wanting more.’
Logline for the pilot:a group of young people in New York City use the power of family and storytelling to turn their tragedies into triumphs, or at least a happier ending and maybe even the potential to pay their rent
