About

‘Berenice’ is a gothic horror adaptation of Edgar Allan Poe’s short story. Berenice and Egaeus are a loving couple torn apart, kindled by her descent into illness, his into madness, her march toward death, and his spiraling obsession with her teeth. We wanted to take Poe’s story and explore the central dramatic argument that there should be no line too far when concerned for a loved one’s well-being. Too often people ignore mental health concerns, sweeping it under the rug because it can’t be “seen” like a broken bone or muscle strain. But mental health is just as important as physical health, and that is no more evident than in this story. Our goal is to destigmatize the conversation around mental health, while entertaining audiences with a gruesome horror story by one of America’s greatest authors.
