E.G.G. is an exploration of humanity pushed to its furthest extreme. When there is nowhere to run and nowhere to hide, which parts of us prevail? The most refined, civil parts of ourselves? Or something much more treacherous, insidious, and potentially, intrinsic to who we truly are?
“As an immigrant artist who had to struggle and fight for every inch I got, I felt the need to explore and share that experience through my art. I wanted to explore the extremes of the human condition by placing characters into situations that push them to their ultimate breaking point. In this way, I could get at what it truly means to be human when all pretenses are forcibly dropped.
This curiosity converged with this image I just couldn’t get out of my head: a little girl clutching an egg. I explored this impulse further: Why is she holding it? Where is she? As my mind unwound this idea, she was joined by another person. What was his role in all this? Then came the cave and the spirals. The then dark gloom. The desperation. The idea that maybe it was the end of the world. That their egg was more than just an egg.
There it was. The spark of something. I knew immediately that these ideas were meant to converge: my fascination with the polar recesses of human emotion and instinct combined with this dark, literally-world-ending scenario, in which four survivors come upon a potential way out, a saving grace. But not all of them are so quick to see it that way.”
Humanity is at a crossroads. Just turn on the TV—people wear their polarizing opinions like armor against anyone who thinks differently. The days of collaboration, compromise, and empathy are over, replaced with save-yourself tactics, ghosting, and running away from it all.
And it’s no one’s fault that we’ve resorted to this reality! The uniting traumas we’ve faced post-COVID, staring wide-eyed into the possibility of revived fascism, with more and more people feeling less and less connected, have launched all of us into a perpetual fight or flight. Even the faster-than-expected evolution of AI presents rhetorical opposition to what we’ve always assumed was uniquely human: our capacity for creation.
Now more than ever, topics are rising about our chances of survival as a species. It truly feels like we are at a crossroads and E.G.G. so viscerally explores these extremes. It holds a mirror to our actions and beliefs and the consequences thereof. What happens when your fight or flight kicks in but there’s nowhere to run? What happens when the literal-last people on Earth with you can’t be trusted? What happens when you have no more energy to pretend that everything is going to be fine?
