Looking back on 2022, it's hard not to feel anxious about our world. My antidote to the viruses, vitriol, and violence that have permeated our daily consciousness is to tell stories that inject hope into our veins. Hope is the best medicine for despair. Especially in the form of story.
Beyond the Bridge: Placemaking in Akumal tells the story of one Caribbean coastal town’s extraordinary connection to an international gathering of mural artists and how these relationships transformed the face and future of the community. For those who have already contributed, thank you so much! We've completed the trailer and are now working on completing the documentary and accompanying website. We're at the finish line and need your help to cross it!
Through the lens of creative placemaking, we made a vibrant short film to tell the story of the Akumal Arts Festival. Our purpose is to inspire towns, cities, and communities around the globe to invite artists into their civic engagement process and reap a multitude of benefits.
You’ll meet civic leaders, artists, and community members, such as Jonathan, a six year old fighting for his life with only one wish: to have a mural painted on his house and Lluvia, who had no hope of realizing her dream to study art in college until the Festival sparked a life changing relationship. You’ll hear stories of connection, hope, and creativity.
I'm asking you to help us cross the finish line!
What's between us and the finish line? $10,000!
These funds will secure editing, color correction, sound mixing, Spanish subtitles, and a dedicated website so that the film is widely accessible and serves as a hub for sharing resources and sparking conversations that help people to strengthen and sustain their own communities.
Generous support for the pre-production and production phases of Beyond the Bridge was provided by Community Engagement of Orange County, California ($10,000 seed funding) and from intrepid individual donors whose contributions matched the seed funding.
