About

My name is Katie Lindsay, and I am the Co-Founder and Artistic Director of Big Little Theater Company. I am also the Director of our upcoming project, MENSTRUATION: A Period Piece. This experimental, feminist musical theatricalizes the uterus through epic storytelling, a diverse ensemble, and choral music. In a love story told from inside a queer woman's body, we forge through layers of shame in a musical that celebrates the menstrual cycle's joy, rage, and creativity.

Big Little Theater Company produces plays, musicals, and community events that are radically inclusive, imaginative, and transcendent. We explore urgent and timely topics. Our work empowers artists creatively and economically by placing art at the center of our producing models and paying artists a living wage. We are committed to diverse casts and creative teams so that our work speaks to the spectrum of the human experience.

Our first production in Los Angeles was A Walk in My Neighborhood: a COVID-safe, one-on-one, interactive guided audio walk through my neighborhood of Atwater Village. This individual artistic experience wove together personal storytelling with the history of LA. It investigated how we belong to the land on which we live. We proudly succeeded in creating a safe, live theater during the height of the pandemic. The walk featured socially distant, live performances, including a violin solo and a surprise appearance from me, who waved from Griffith Park across the 5 freeway. We also produce an ongoing event titled MeetCute, an evening of short plays where we matchmake playwrights and directors to collaborate on a short play. MeetCute provides space for artists and audiences to mingle, make connections, and build community in the LA theater scene. We've supported over 200 artists in 8 sold-out shows. During the pandemic, we offered successful virtual speed dating and artist workshops. It was essential that we stayed connected to our artistic community and offered an outlet to create art at home.

We are doubling down on our commitment to producing high-quality, ambitious, theatrical work in LA in an ethical and well-resourced environment. Thank you so much for being on this journey with us.
