Founded in October 2017, Big Red Dance Project (BRDP) is a collective of adults who expand the notions of who can dance in our current society.
Grounded in the classical modern dance traditions of founder and artistic director Gerri Houlihan, BRDP challenges the stereotypes that modern dancers must be young, thin, and competitive. With dancers ranging in age from 34 to 78, the group includes performers who are new to dance, a former box office manager for the American Dance Festival, a visual artist and several current and retired dance educators.
Choreographing for the first time in 5 years Gerri created dances for the company which premiered in May 2018 at the Durham Arts Council. The performance was titled: “Dancing Out Loud.”
Big Red Dance Project became a sponsored project of Fractured Atlas, a non-profit arts service organization in October 2018.
In February 2019 BRDP will participate in a panel and a performance at North Carolina Dance Education Organization’s annual conference.
In May 2019 BRDP will present its annual concert at Durham Arts Council.
