Black Broads Abroad is a media platform and docu-series founded by Phelena Napper. Originally from South Central Los Angeles, Napper is a veteran expat who has lived across five continents and nine countries, with solo travel to over 50 countries. Leveraging this extensive background, the project serves as a cinematic and oral archive of Black women who have reclaimed their autonomy through international migration, exploring the radical act of moving through the world on one's own terms.
The project is built upon an archive of over 50 interviews with Black women from all walks of life, representing experiences across six continents and nearly 100 countries. Currently, the work is evolving into a high-production docu-series. The inaugural season centers on an intergenerational cohort in the Netherlands, documenting a diverse spectrum of women spanning ages 30 to 60, including queer women, divorcees, and single mothers. It captures a nuanced portrait of Black womanhood and varying professions in a European context.
Black Broads Abroad is presented through several primary creative channels, including the docu-series, an ongoing podcast and radio show, and a forthcoming book. By centering the voices of Black women as global citizens, the project functions as a creative media platform that helps Black women learn how to move through the world autonomously and globally.
