About

McGuffey Art Center is honored to present a celebration of the black creative community of Charlottesville.

Our building, and the resources of our association, will be dedicated to showing the work of black visual and performing artists, several of whom will be making their debut exhibits. Artists work in various disciplines, including drawing, painting, pottery, photography, and the art of creating musical instruments from gourds. Performance Art planned during the month-long program includes live musical performances (free and open to the public) every Saturday, kicked off by a special First Friday dance and drumming performance by longtime McGuffey member Chihamba, two Story-telling programs, and a Congo mask-making workshop run by the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts.

Our Black History Month exhibit is only the beginning of a shift in our organizational commitment to actively removing barriers of accessibility, with a focus on sustainable, community-focused inclusion. Our goal is to fund and implement permanent outreach programs and partnerships with other community art centers and service organizations.

In order to maximize the effectiveness of this program, McGuffey is reaching out to individuals, families, businesses, and organizations to request your financial support. We have established a budget of $7,500 to cover special events, waived fees, and general operational costs.
