Donation Update!

We just received an anonymous donation of $1000 via check!  Thank you SO MUCH, mystery donor!  We are so grateful!
How many sixteen year olds do you know who want to develop an original musical and present it on an international stage?  Our theater troupe at Flushing High School has been invited and accepted to perform at the world’s largest performing arts festival, the Edinburgh Festival Fringe in Edinburgh, Scotland August 7-21, 2018.  We are the only school from New York state chosen to perform this year!

We are bringing an original musical written by our troupe about the life of Emily Warren Roebling, the woman who helped engineer and complete the Brooklyn Bridge.  We hope this show not only allows us to share our talents as performers, but will help people learn about an important, pioneering figure in New York history.

Our after school theater program is a hodge podge of eclectic souls who love creating live theater.  We work as an ensemble, adding kids to our theater family who may have never seen themselves on or backstage.  The majority of our group are immigrants or children of recent immigrants, living at or below the poverty line.  Many have never seen a theatrical production, let alone been in one, even though they live in one of the most vibrant theater capitals of the world.  Those who do have experience in theater come into our program disenfranchised, having been assigned to attend our school because they were unable to secure one of the few seats available in an audition-based theater school.  Our program finds shining stars in these kids who were lost in the broken high school application system.

In the words of one of our seniors, Ainara Hidalgo, “It is my dream to attend and represent NYC.  Theater has changed my life and I believe it can educate not only our youth, but everyone.”
