Cadent Shakespeare Co. is an ensemble of tenderhearted, brilliant, ambitious artists seeking to rebalance the relationship between resource and creativity, in pursuit of community enrichment, self-expression, and damn good storytelling.
Our artists bring creative breadth and depth, professional training and experience, and passion for our craft. But we’re also out here raising families, running business, and building communities, not to mention tending to our own physical and mental health. “Cadent” speaks to our commitment to a sustainable rhythm and structure strong enough to withstand a creative process while also preserving the livelihood of our artists.
So how do we plan to pull that off? How can we tell great stories, connect with great audiences, make that great work, and leave ourselves and our community nourished rather than depleted following a project?
The short answer is an ethics-based financial and leadership structure that will create accessible opportunities for artists to engage in rigorous creative collaboration.
The key to our logistical process is deceptively simple: to have money before we budget it, putting the cart well behind the horse. Seems obvious, right? But under the capitalist drive and urgency to grow at any cost, operating at a deficit can become the default, and that’s just not good for anybody’s nervous system.
If you’re ready to get us rolling on this slow-and-steady fundraising process, we’re especially hoping to build a foundation of monthly supporters at $5 through $30 levels, in keeping with our philosophy of durational, sustainable, long-term creativity and collaboration.
