About

Candela Flamenca is a two-pronged initiative: (1) to retell classic stories through flamenco so as to foreground subtle features of their characters, and (2) to develop and present original high-quality flamenco choreographies.

Classic stories that Candela Flamenca currently has in development include Al Alba (based on Federico Garcia Lorca’s The House of Bernarda Alba) and the Biblical story Salome. Through vignettes, certain events, characters, and dynamics alluded to in the stories, but frequently overshadowed by more prominent events, will be explored and dramatized.

Candela Flamenca’s creator and core group of collaborators believe the arts can help people make meaning, propel aspirations, safeguard children’s lives, and give adults a renewed sense of purpose. Themselves a living story of how arts experiences open nonlinear possibilities and infuse vitality, Nahede and her project partners are committed to bringing similarly meaningful performance experiences to others.
